Hard-disk parameters are the values and labels that describe a drive’s capacity, physical format, connection, recording method, performance, power limits and reliability claims. To choose or replace a drive, check the exact model’s specifications against your device and intended workload; no single number such as RPM or cache size tells you whether a drive is the right choice.
Which hard-drive specifications matter first?
Start with compatibility, then compare the characteristics that affect your workload. Manufacturer manuals list these as separate specifications because they describe different things.
- Fit and connection: Check the drive’s form factor and interface, such as SATA, against the computer, NAS or enclosure.
- Capacity and sector format: Confirm the advertised size and whether the drive’s logical and physical sector sizes are supported by the host.
- Recording method: Identify whether the exact model uses CMR or SMR, especially if sustained or repeated writes matter.
- Workload performance: Compare relevant sustained transfer rates and other performance information rather than treating one headline number as a complete benchmark.
- Operating and ownership limits: Review published workload, reliability, power, environmental, warranty and support specifications for the exact model.
These checks are more useful than declaring one specification universally best: suitability depends on the device and what you plan to do with the drive.
Capacity and sector size
Capacity
Capacity is the amount of storage specified for a drive. Manufacturers may list a formatted capacity or a guaranteed number of sectors, and usable capacity can differ according to the operating environment and formatting. Seagate’s product manual puts it plainly: “Accessible capacity may vary depending on operating environment and formatting.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Manufacturer-listed gigabytes and terabytes may use decimal units. Western Digital defines 1 GB as one billion bytes and 1 TB as one trillion bytes on its WD Blue product page. A computer may display capacity differently, so a difference between a product label and an operating system’s reported value does not by itself establish a fault.
Logical and physical sectors
Sector size describes how data is addressed and organized. A drive can expose a logical sector size different from its physical sector size. For example, a Seagate Enterprise NAS HDD manual gives a model example with 512 logical bytes and 4096 physical bytes per sector.
The related format labels include 512e and 4Kn. In a 512e drive, 512-byte logical sectors are presented while the physical sectors are 4096 bytes; 4Kn uses 4096-byte logical sectors. Verify the exact drive format and host compatibility before replacing a disk, especially in older computers, operating systems or storage systems.

What does RPM mean on a hard drive?
RPM means revolutions per minute: the rotational speed of the drive’s platters. Seagate lists 7200 RPM for specific Enterprise NAS HDD and Exos Recertified examples. Those are model specifications, not a universal value for hard drives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRPM is only one performance factor. It does not state the drive’s sustained transfer rate, nor does it predict performance for every kind of access or workload. Compare the exact model’s performance specifications with your needs instead of treating a higher RPM as an automatic verdict.
Interface speed versus drive transfer rate
The interface is the connection between the drive and its host, such as SATA. A link or signaling rate describes the interface; a media transfer rate describes how quickly data can be transferred from the drive itself. Manufacturer manuals list these as separate values, so they should not be conflated.

A SATA interface’s headline rate is not a guaranteed file-copy speed. For instance, Seagate’s Enterprise NAS HDD manual lists a maximum sustained transfer rate of 237 MiB/s for an 8 TB model example. Seagate’s Exos Recertified data sheet gives model-specific maximum sustained figures of 190 MB/s and 181 MiB/s alongside 512e and 7200 RPM listings. These values describe the named models and are not a neutral head-to-head test.
CMR and SMR recording methods
CMR and SMR describe how a hard drive records data. The label matters because recording method can affect how a drive behaves under a particular workload; it does not establish that one method is always superior.
Check the exact model’s label or data sheet rather than inferring the recording method from a product family name. Western Digital directs readers to its internal-drive product materials for model identification. When comparing drives, consider whether your actual workload involves frequent or sustained writes, and use model-specific information to judge fit.

Cache, SMART and performance claims
Cache
Cache is a buffer whose size may be listed in a specification sheet. A larger cache alone does not establish that a drive will be faster for a particular task. Performance depends on the model and workload, so use the cache figure as one specification rather than a stand-alone ranking.
SMART
SMART is a drive-monitoring system whose pages can include attributes such as throughput performance and spin-up time. Attribute names and interpretations should be checked against documentation for the relevant manufacturer and model; a label should not be treated as a universal diagnosis without that context.

Product sheets may also publish power consumption, operating or environmental limits, workload ratings, reliability information and warranty terms. These fields vary by product family and may not all be stated for every model. Compare the exact drive’s published values and conditions, especially when selecting a disk for continuous operation, a NAS or a constrained enclosure.

How to compare drives for a replacement or purchase
For an internal SATA hard drive or another HDD, use the exact model number—not only the brand or family name—to verify the specifications that determine fit and suitability.
- Confirm form factor, interface and host support.
- Check capacity, logical and physical sector sizes, and any system requirements.
- Look up CMR or SMR status in the model’s own label or data sheet.
- Compare sustained transfer or other workload-relevant performance information; do not substitute interface signaling speed for drive speed.
- Review power, environmental, workload and reliability details, plus warranty and support terms.
Specifications for one model should not be generalized to all hard drives. Seagate’s cited enterprise manuals include older, model-specific examples, while its Exos Recertified sheet applies to named recertified models rather than all consumer or NAS drives. Western Digital also cautions that for drives inside an external enclosure, capacity is guaranteed but model, technology, interface, power use, rotation speed and cache may not be guaranteed. An enclosure’s family name therefore may not reveal every internal-drive specification.
