Hard drive specifications describe different things: whether a drive fits and connects to your system, how much it stores, how it may perform, and the conditions it is designed to handle. To compare drives accurately, start with compatibility and intended workload, then assess capacity, performance, and support terms. A label such as “SATA 6 Gb/s” is an interface rate—not a promise that the drive reads or writes data at 6 Gb/s.

What hard drive specifications tell you

A hard disk drive (HDD) listing combines physical, connection, performance, workload, and support information. Each field answers a different question, and the values apply to the specific model—not automatically to every drive in a product family. For example, manufacturers publish separate desktop, NAS, gaming, and data-center lines, with specifications that vary by model and capacity. See [Seagate’s desktop HDD](https://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/desktop-hdd/), [Seagate’s NAS HDD](https://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/nas-drives/nas-hdd/), [WD_BLACK](https://www.wd.com/content/store/en-us/products/internal-drives/wd-black-desktop-sata-hdd/), and [Ultrastar DC HC590](https://www.wd.com/content/store/en-us/products/internal-drives/data-center-drives/ultrastar-dc-hc590-hdd.html) product pages.

Physical fit, capacity, and connection

Capacity

Capacity is the drive’s nominal storage amount, usually shown in GB or TB. Compare it with the amount of space you need, and check the exact model’s listing. The capacity printed on a product is not necessarily identical to the available-space figure an operating system displays after formatting and its own reporting conventions.

Form factor and dimensions

Form factor identifies a drive’s physical size class. A 3.5-inch drive, for example, needs a bay or enclosure designed to accept that size. Check the host’s supported drive size and any maximum thickness; a drive with the right connector can still fail to fit. WD identifies its cited WD_BLACK example as a 3.5-inch internal drive on its product page.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Interface

The interface is how the drive connects to its host. SATA is a common internal HDD interface. A specification such as SATA 6 Gb/s describes the interface’s signaling capability, not the sustained speed of the spinning disks. Seagate’s BarraCuda datasheet lists interface capability separately from sustained data rate, so look for the latter when comparing sequential throughput.

Performance specifications: read the label carefully

RPM

RPM means rotations per minute and indicates spindle speed. It is a useful performance clue, but it does not by itself tell you how quickly a drive will handle a particular application. Compare it with the model’s sustained transfer rate and the demands of your workload.

Cache or buffer

Cache, also called buffer, is on-drive memory used to buffer data. Manufacturers list it separately from other performance measures. A larger cache number alone does not establish that one HDD will feel faster in every task; interpret it alongside sustained throughput and the work the drive will perform.

Transfer rate

Check what the listed rate measures. A spec sheet may distinguish interface capability, burst or buffer-to-host rate, and sustained drive-to-host rate. These are not interchangeable: an interface maximum should not be presented as the drive’s typical read or write speed. For sustained sequential performance, use the model’s stated sustained rate and retain any qualifier such as “maximum.”

Model-specific examples

The following figures illustrate why specifications must stay attached to the exact model and capacity. They are manufacturer examples, not universal HDD standards or independent benchmarks; publication years were not stated in the accessed product-page results, and the BarraCuda datasheet’s revision date was not confirmed there.

Example Published specifications How to interpret it
Seagate NAS HDD example 6 TB; 7,200 RPM; 128 MB cache; 226 MB/s maximum sustainable transfer rate; SATA 6 Gb/s; 1,000,000-hour MTBF. Figures belong to the cited NAS HDD example, not every NAS drive. The 226 MB/s figure is expressly a maximum sustainable rate; SATA 6 Gb/s is the interface rating. Seagate NAS HDD page
Seagate BarraCuda 3.5-inch, 2 TB datasheet example SATA 6 Gb/s; 220 MB/s maximum sustained data rate; 256 MB cache; 7,200 RPM; SMR; 55 TB/year workload limit. This is a capacity-specific datasheet example and may describe a prior product generation, not current advice for all BarraCuda drives. In the same datasheet, 1 TB and 500 GB variants list different cache values and CMR. Seagate BarraCuda datasheet

Recording technology and workload ratings

Recording technology

Check the exact model’s recording method when workload, compatibility, or sustained write behavior matters. The cited BarraCuda datasheet lists SMR for its 2 TB example and CMR for its 1 TB and 500 GB variants. Do not assume a recording method applies to every capacity or revision in a drive family. The available examples do not provide a complete, current CMR-versus-SMR compatibility guide.

Workload rate limit

A workload rate limit estimates how much host data a manufacturer rates a drive to transfer over a period, often expressed in TB per year. It is not storage capacity and it is not a speed rating. Confirm the exact model’s documentation: Seagate lists a workload rate limit on its desktop HDD page and in the cited BarraCuda datasheet.

Reliability ratings and warranty

MTBF and AFR

MTBF (mean time between failures) and AFR (annualized failure rate) are statistical reliability ratings calculated or presented under stated assumptions. They are not predictions of how long an individual drive will last. Western Digital labels the Ultrastar DC HC590’s 2.5-million-hour MTBF as projected; it is a product rating, not a promise that a unit will run for that many hours. The Ultrastar DC HC590 page also lists a five-year limited warranty. No population-level failure statistic should be inferred from these product ratings.

Warranty

A limited warranty states the manufacturer’s coverage terms; it does not guarantee against data loss. Terms vary by product and region, so check the exact drive’s applicable warranty information. Keep a separate backup of important files rather than treating a warranty or reliability rating as data protection.

Power, noise, and temperature

These specifications can matter in a quiet desktop, a compact enclosure, or a NAS that runs continuously. Manufacturers do not publish the same details in every listing, and measurements can depend on conditions. Compare values only between exact models and with their stated measurement conditions.

How to compare drives for your use

Use this order to screen candidates. It prevents an attractive headline number from distracting from a mismatch in fit or intended use.

  1. Check compatibility: Verify physical form factor, thickness where relevant, interface, and support from the computer or enclosure.
  2. Match the workload: Identify whether the drive is intended for desktop use, NAS, gaming, surveillance, or data-center operation. Check the exact model’s workload limit and recording technology where relevant.
  3. Choose capacity: Select enough nominal capacity for your needs, and compare cost per nominal TB only using current, verified prices.
  4. Compare relevant performance: Use sustained transfer rate and performance behavior relevant to your task. Do not rank drives solely by interface rate, RPM, or cache size.
  5. Account for operating conditions: Compare power, noise, temperature, and vibration if the drive’s environment makes them important.
  6. Review support and risk: Read the model’s warranty and workload rating, and interpret reliability figures as ratings with assumptions—not guarantees.

Product families help narrow the search, but they are not substitutes for checking model numbers. Seagate publishes distinct desktop and NAS categories, while Western Digital’s cited examples include a WD_BLACK gaming-oriented HDD and an Ultrastar data-center drive. Their categories indicate different intended markets; they do not mean every drive in a family has identical specifications.
