Short answer: Happo is a natural first evaluation for teams focused on component screenshots, Storybook, pull-request review, and clearly published snapshot pricing. Applitools is worth evaluating when Visual AI, a broad integration catalog, and cloud-based cross-browser and device execution are priorities. Neither vendor’s documentation establishes that it will produce fewer false alarms for your application; run a representative pilot before choosing.
How the two tools approach visual testing
Both services add screenshot-based visual checks to software testing workflows, so the decision is less about whether your team needs a physical device and more about what it tests, how it reviews changes, and which browsers or platforms it must cover.
Happo: component and pull-request workflow
Happo’s product materials emphasize screenshots of components and stories, side-by-side visual differences, and feedback in CI and pull requests. Its documented integrations include Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, and a generic API. The Storybook workflow also describes responsive viewport coverage and accessibility regression checks alongside screenshot runs. See Happo’s product overview and Storybook screenshot-testing information.
Applitools: Visual AI and broad execution options
Applitools positions Visual AI as a way to identify meaningful visual changes while filtering rendering noise, and describes cloud-based parallel checks across browsers and devices. These are vendor claims, not a comparative finding about false positives; validate them with your own pages and components. Its integration catalog names Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Appium, and Storybook, among other options. Applitools reports “60+ major testing frameworks and languages, source code tools, CI/CD tools, and collaboration tools”; that count is vendor-reported. Review the platform overview, web testing information, and integration catalog.

How to choose: run a comparable pilot
Feature lists cannot tell you which service will be easier to maintain or produce less review noise on your application. If both candidates fit your stack, evaluate them on the same representative test inventory.
- Select representative states. Include components and full pages relevant to your team, responsive breakpoints, dynamic content, fonts, and at least one intentional design change.
- Integrate with the framework you already use. Check the exact SDK or integration, CI setup, baseline approval flow, permissions, and whether all intended reviewers can participate.
- Confirm coverage against requirements. Compare browser and OS versions, device types, concurrency, and accessibility checks with the entitlements in each proposed plan.
- Measure the operating work. Track setup effort, run time, false alarms that require review, missed meaningful changes, accessibility output, and baseline-update effort. Do not infer superiority from a vendor feature description.
- Model the same volume. Count the component/browser snapshots or page checkpoints your actual runs require, including expected frequency and likely growth, then compare the annual total and any overages or custom quote.
ScreenshotNeo as another option to evaluate
If your need is to capture website screenshots through an API or from an AI agent rather than to manage visual-regression baselines for an application, try ScreenshotNeo first: it is a website screenshot API and MCP server with clean captures, and only clean shots are billed. It is a different workflow from the Happo and Applitools visual-testing services above.
