Dutch eyewear chain Hans Anders suspended sales of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses in the Netherlands and Belgium on October 2, 2026, citing public and political debate about smart glasses and questions about how the technology can be used. The move is a retailer’s sales decision, not evidence of a legal ban or a Europe-wide withdrawal.
What Hans Anders suspended—and where
Reuters reported that Hans Anders, one of the largest Dutch eyewear retail chains, suspended sales in the Netherlands and Belgium. NL Times reported that the glasses were unavailable in Hans Anders stores and its webshop at the time, and described the pause as indefinite. That describes this retailer’s channels, not every seller or route to purchase.
Reuters said Hans Anders did not sell the glasses in Germany, Austria, or Sweden. That does not establish whether other retailers or channels offered them in those countries. Reuters also reported that parent company Nexeye had 776 stores across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Sweden; that is the group’s reported footprint, not a count of Hans Anders locations or an indicator of product availability. (Reuters; NL Times)
Why the chain paused sales
A Hans Anders spokesperson said the decision followed “the ongoing public and political debate surrounding smart glasses and the questions being raised about the conditions under which this technology can be used.” The reports do not name the spokesperson.

The pause came amid separate concerns about camera-equipped smart glasses. Reuters reported that UK pub chain Wetherspoon restricted their use over covert-recording concerns. It also reported that online-abuse prevention group Offlimits urged Meta and Ray-Ban owner EssilorLuxottica to remove the glasses from sale until surreptitious recordings could be prevented. These were separate developments, not a coordinated action or a ban. (Reuters)
What Meta says about the camera indicator
A Meta spokesperson said every pair with a camera has a bright light on the front that blinks when a photo or video is taken, cannot be turned off, and disables the camera if someone covers or tampers with it. This is Meta’s description of the safeguard. It does not establish whether bystanders will notice the light or resolve every concern about recording. The reports do not name the spokesperson. What the Dutch privacy reporting says about recording people
Reuters reported that the Dutch privacy regulator, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (AP), had warned that videos made with smart glasses showing identifiable people generally cannot be shared or published without their permission. Obtaining permission may be difficult in a public place. This is Reuters’ summary of the regulator’s warning, not a substitute for the AP’s full guidance or legal advice; the rules relevant to a particular recording depend on its circumstances.
