Neither is reliably more accurate for every old letter. On one 2026 test of 50 legible early-19th-century handwritten documents, the best reported machine result came close to the human reference transcript. That is not proof that OCR beats expert transcribers across old letters generally. For a personal or historical letter, use handwriting recognition as a draft if helpful, then verify important and uncertain words against the image.
What “more accurate” means
Handwriting recognition—often called OCR or HTR—turns an image of writing into text. To compare its output with a transcription, researchers commonly use character error rate (CER) and word error rate (WER). CER measures character-level differences; WER measures word-level differences. A result can score well overall and still misread a name, date, place, number, or short phrase that matters to you.
These scores also depend on the reference transcript used as the answer key. A mismatch tells you the machine and reference differ; it does not, by itself, prove that the machine or the human reading is correct on a disputed mark. Human readers can be uncertain too, especially with unfamiliar historical handwriting.
What the benchmark results show
A 2026 benchmark by Jim Clifford, Jacob Polay, Jessica Jack, Mark Humphries, and Lianne C. Leddy compared six recognition systems with human-transcribed archival material. Its handwriting subset comprised 50 legible early-19th-century administrative documents, including clerical hands from Lower Canada and the fur trade. The authors reported these semantic error rates for that subset:

| System | Semantic CER | Semantic WER |

| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 1.52% | 3.79% |
| Infinity Parser 2 | 2.72% | 6.79% |
| Chandra 2 | 3.89% | 10.51% |
| olmOCR 2 | 5.34% | 11.76% |
| GLM-OCR | 7.98% | 15.89% |
These are benchmark-author results from the specified corpus and evaluation protocol, not expected scores for a particular family letter. The authors also report a Gemini 3 Pro run on the same corpus with 0.91% CER; a corresponding WER is not stated in the benchmark summary. The benchmark notes that its corpora are narrow in language, period, and difficulty, are English-dominant, and that even the gold transcription of the hardest pages involves interpretation. Systems can also refuse, truncate, modernize spelling, or fabricate text. Read the 2026 historical-document OCR benchmark for its dataset and protocol.
What other historical-handwriting research adds
A 2025 study by Mark Humphries and co-authors tested large language models on a diverse corpus of 18th- and 19th-century English handwritten documents. Its abstract reports initial LLM transcription CERs of 5.7–7% and WERs of 8.9–15.9%. When LLMs corrected their own output and conventional HTR output, the study reports rates as low as 1.8% CER and 3.5% WER, which the authors describe as near-human levels. Those figures belong to that study’s corpus and method; they are not a general head-to-head measure showing that current OCR is more accurate than people on old letters. See Humphries et al. in Historical Methods.

When to use a person, OCR, or both
- OCR/HTR can help with a legible page. The strongest directly relevant 2026 result came from legible documents, so it does not establish performance on faded, damaged, obscured, or especially difficult writing.
- Human reading is essential when interpretation matters. Names, dates, places, numbers, quotations, and surprising phrases deserve image-level checking rather than trust in an overall score.
- A hybrid workflow is often practical. A machine draft can reduce typing, while a person compares it with the page. Check whether the system is flagging uncertainty or presenting a fluent guess; plausible invented words can be easy to miss.
- Match the workflow to the purpose. A rough search aid may tolerate errors that are unacceptable in a faithful quotation, family record, or historical argument. Keep faithful transcription separate from any modernized spelling or interpretation.
How to transcribe an old handwritten letter
- Start with the whole page. Work from a clear image, then enlarge uncertain words where possible. Seeing surrounding lines can provide context, but context should not override the marks on the page.
- If you use recognition software, preserve its status as a draft. Do not silently treat fluent machine output as verified text.
- Check consequential details against the image. Prioritize names, dates, places, numbers, and phrases whose meaning would change the interpretation.
- Compare repeated letterforms. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration advises: “Compare similar letters in the document to help confirm that you are reading the text correctly.” A writer’s repeated forms can help distinguish ambiguous characters; for example, the long “s” in older writing may resemble “f.” See the agency’s transcription tips.
- Retain what the writer put on the page. For a faithful transcription, preserve capitalization, abbreviations, names, dates, misspellings, and punctuation. Put explanations or normalized spellings in a separate note.
- Mark uncertainty instead of guessing. The National Archives recommends using “[illegible]” when a word cannot be made out. Apply that convention, or another clearly explained one, to genuinely unreadable text.
Does OCR beat expert human transcription?
There is no representative statistic in the cited studies establishing how much more accurate expert human transcription is—or how much less accurate it is—than current OCR across old letters generally. The benchmark and 2025 study show that machine systems can perform strongly on their tested historical-document corpora, particularly with correction, but the result for a specific letter depends on its handwriting, image, language, spelling, and the task’s tolerance for error. A score close to a human-created reference is not the same thing as a controlled contest against expert transcribers on every kind of letter.
