Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Kiro is a desktop development environment built on a VS Code foundation. To get useful work done, start by opening a project, give the agent persistent context through steering files, choose chat or a spec according to the task, and add hooks or MCP integrations only where they solve a real workflow need. Kiro documents these capabilities; its feature descriptions are not independent proof that generated code is correct, so review changes and run your repository’s checks.
What is Kiro IDE?
Kiro describes its IDE as a desktop environment built on a VS Code foundation, combining agent capabilities with familiar development features such as source control, extensions, chat, and codebase indexing. Its documented workflow features include specs, steering files, hooks, and MCP server connections. Kiro also offers CLI and Web surfaces, but capabilities and prerequisites differ between them. See Kiro’s IDE documentation and its main documentation.
Kiro’s product overview presents agents as able to execute tasks and describes deterministic tools, including property-based tests, as a way to verify work. Those are descriptions of the intended product workflow, not a guarantee that a particular generated change is correct or complete. The documentation reviewed does not provide independent comparative testing of output quality or reliability.
How to use Kiro for a first project
1. Open a codebase
Install Kiro, sign in, then open an existing project or create one. Kiro’s first-project guide assumes you have a project and basic familiarity with its structure and technology stack. Before asking the agent to make a change, identify the relevant directories, how the project is built, and which tests or checks the team expects.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Give the agent persistent project context
Steering files provide context that can be reused across tasks: project purpose, technology choices, structure, conventions, requirements, and team workflows. Kiro’s guide describes their role this way: “Steering files provide context about your project, helping Kiro understand your codebase, conventions, and requirements.” Workspace steering commonly lives in .kiro/steering/. Kiro’s steering documentation explains the feature; the hook actions documentation also describes generating foundation files for product, technology-stack, and project-structure context, with custom files for standards and practices.
Keep this context actionable. State conventions the agent should follow and point to the authoritative places in the codebase; avoid duplicating extensive documentation that may become stale. Steering supplements your review rather than replacing it.

3. Choose chat or a spec based on the work
For a narrow, well-understood change, begin with an agent chat or the quick-spec route Kiro presents. For a feature with meaningful requirements, uncertainty, or architectural choices, use a spec: Kiro describes specs as a process that turns a high-level idea into requirements, a technical design, and sequenced implementation tasks. That structure gives you a chance to inspect the proposed scope and design before implementation. Kiro outlines these options in its IDE overview and IDE documentation.
A practical decision rule is to use the lightest process that makes the work reviewable. A small fix may need only a clear prompt and a test. A feature that affects several components or leaves important design choices open benefits from explicit requirements and a design you can challenge before code is changed.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Automate repeatable checks with hooks
Hooks let you trigger an action in response to an event. Kiro documents examples such as running a linter or tests after changes and validating work before a commit. A hook can run a shell command or send an agent prompt: choose a command when the check is deterministic and repeatable, and a prompt when the action depends on the agent’s project context. Some hook types can block an operation. See Kiro’s hooks documentation and hook actions.
Start with a check your project already trusts, such as its established test or lint command. Confirm the hook’s trigger and action are appropriate before relying on it; an automated hook does not make a weak or misconfigured check meaningful.

5. Connect external tools through MCP when needed
Kiro’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) support connects servers that can provide tools, prompts, or resources. Use it when the agent needs access to an external tool or knowledge source that is not supplied by the project itself. Kiro’s MCP guide includes AWS Documentation MCP as an example. The setup and behavior depend on the server configuration, so follow the relevant server’s instructions and verify what it exposes before using it in a project.
6. Review the change and run project checks
Inspect the diff for correctness, scope, and consistency with project conventions, then run the checks appropriate to the repository. Treat the agent’s explanation as a useful aid, not as evidence that the change works. Kiro documents the workflow and tools, but the documentation cited here does not establish generated-code accuracy or reliability for your specific project.

Does Kiro work with VS Code extensions?
Kiro documents an Open VSX extension ecosystem and compatibility with VS Code settings. That does not establish that every extension distributed through every VS Code marketplace will work in Kiro. Check an extension’s availability and compatibility in Kiro’s documented environment rather than assuming universal support; see the Kiro IDE overview.
Are Kiro IDE, CLI, and Web the same?
No. Kiro documents IDE, CLI, Web, and Mobile surfaces, and their capabilities are not identical. For example, Kiro’s Web documentation lists Pro, Pro+, Pro Max, and Power plans, a connected GitHub or GitLab provider, and us-east-1 for AWS Identity Center cloud sessions. These are Web-specific details, not prerequisites for the desktop IDE, and availability can change. Check the current Web documentation for Web requirements rather than applying them to another surface.
