Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStop treating every failed screenshot as the same problem. A timeout, a browser-worker network error, a target page returning HTTP 503, and a successful navigation with missing images call for different logs and retry decisions. Set an overall deadline, classify the failure by phase, and retry only transient, repeatable work.
First distinguish a failed request from an HTTP error page
An HTTP response with status 404 or 503 means a server responded. It does not mean the browser necessarily failed to make the request. Playwright documents that HTTP error responses such as 404 and 503 complete as HTTP requests; they trigger requestfinished, not requestfailed. The latter is for cases where the client could not obtain an HTTP response, such as a network error. See the Playwright Page API documentation.
This distinction matters because retrying a target that consistently returns 503 may simply capture the same error page repeatedly, while retrying a transient connection reset may succeed. Record response status separately from transport and browser errors. Also distinguish a completed navigation from a complete-looking page: the main document can load while a font, image, script, or API resource fails.
Use failure categories that guide action
- DNS, connect, or TLS: no usable HTTP response was obtained. Check name resolution, connectivity, certificates, and whether the failure is transient.
- Navigation or operation timeout: a configured deadline expired. Determine whether the main document, an action, or rendering consumed the budget.
- HTTP status: a response exists. Apply policy based on the status and the target’s purpose; do not label it a transport failure.
- Browser crash or worker loss: the browser did not finish the job. Preserve the worker or provider identifier and decide whether to rerun on a healthy worker.
- Blocked resource or incomplete assets: navigation may have succeeded, but part of the page did not load. Capture the failed-resource list and decide whether that resource is essential to the screenshot.
- Bot check or CAPTCHA: the target returned a challenge rather than the intended content. Repeated retries are unlikely to solve a deterministic challenge.
Set timeouts at every layer
A screenshot job can wait on several distinct operations: opening the page, interacting with it, waiting for a selector or network condition, and producing the image. Give those operations bounded budgets, then enforce a separate overall job deadline. The overall deadline should expire before the queue’s visibility timeout, so the worker can report a stable result rather than being silently reclaimed while still running.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not let a single stalled resource consume the entire job budget. Allocate time to connection and navigation, then to required resources and rendering. The values depend on your service and target pages; neither framework documentation cited here establishes a universally correct timeout for screenshot workloads.
Playwright
Playwright page operations accept timeout options, and its APIs support cancellation with an AbortSignal. Set operation-specific timeouts and propagate cancellation when the job’s overall deadline expires. See Page API and APIRequestContext documentation.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
try {
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 20_000,
});
console.log({ status: response?.status() ?? null });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', timeout: 10_000 });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
This example bounds navigation and screenshot capture separately; it is not a complete job-deadline or retry implementation. Add an overall cancellation mechanism in the job runner and ensure it can stop outstanding browser work.

Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s wait methods document a 30-second default timeout, which can be changed with Page.setDefaultTimeout(). Use an explicit value appropriate to the operation rather than relying unknowingly on a default. The default is a documented product setting, not evidence that 30 seconds is appropriate for every target. See the Puppeteer Page.setDefaultTimeout API.

Choose the wait condition deliberately. Waiting for all network activity can be a poor fit for pages with long-lived connections or continuous background requests; a document-ready condition plus a targeted selector or bounded delay may be more predictable. If you need a particular image, chart, or client-rendered component, wait for that condition instead of assuming the whole site’s network becomes idle.
Retry only transient, repeatable failures
Retries increase load and latency. Use them only when repeating the capture is safe and the failure may clear without changing the request. For a screenshot GET, repeating the capture is generally a read operation, but consider side effects in target pages, authentication flows, and any custom interaction you perform before capture.

Playwright’s APIRequestContext documents maxRetries with a default of 0; currently, its built-in retries apply only to ECONNRESET, not HTTP response codes. Do not assume that configuring this option implements a full screenshot retry policy. See APIRequestContext.
A practical retry policy
- Classify the attempt from the observed evidence: transport failure, timeout, browser failure, HTTP status, or incomplete assets.
- Retry likely transient failures such as a connection reset or selected temporary server and provider failures. Make retryability explicit in your application policy.
- Do not automatically retry invalid URLs, authentication failures, deterministic 4xx responses, or repeated identical failures.
- Use exponential backoff with jitter, a hard attempt limit, and the remaining overall job deadline. Do not sleep past the deadline or let retries multiply unboundedly across queue and client layers.
- Log each attempt and return one final result with the attempt count and a correlation ID.
DNS failures, connection refusals, provider rate limits, and 5xx statuses need an explicit policy. The supplied framework behavior does not prescribe which of these your service should retry: consider the error, target, provider limits, and remaining deadline. A 503 is an HTTP response, so handle it as a status decision rather than expecting a transport retry mechanism to catch it.

Playwright exposes request events and routing controls that can help reproduce or isolate failing resources. Use routing to test whether a particular resource is blocking progress, but do not silently alter production captures in a way that changes what the image represents. Keep diagnostic HTML, traces, and screenshots only where your privacy and retention policy permits. The Playwright API documentation covers page events and request routing at Page API.
Return a stable error contract
Clients should not have to parse browser-specific error strings to decide what to do. Return a stable category, whether the error is retryable, attempts used, elapsed time, and correlation ID. Include HTTP status when one exists; omit it for failures where no HTTP response was received. Preserve a concise message for operators without exposing secrets.

Troubleshoot common screenshot failures
| Symptom | Likely distinction | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Target returns 503 | An HTTP response was received; this is not necessarily a browser transport failure. | Log the status and response details. Apply a bounded status-specific retry policy only if temporary failure is plausible. |
| Request failed with no status | The client may not have received an HTTP response. | Log the phase and error text; inspect DNS, connection, TLS, and worker/provider health before retrying. |
| Navigation times out but page partly appears | The navigation condition may be too broad, or a resource may remain pending. | Choose a bounded, suitable wait condition; wait for a required selector when appropriate, and inspect failed or unfinished requests. |
| Screenshot succeeds but images or widgets are missing | Main navigation completed while one or more assets failed or had not rendered. | Record resource failures and wait for the specific visual element required by the capture. |
| Retries never recover a challenge page | The target may be presenting a bot check or CAPTCHA, not a transient network outage. | Stop retrying identical outcomes and return a distinct challenge or blocked-page verdict. |
| Jobs disappear or run longer than expected | Per-operation waits, queue visibility, and overall job deadlines may be misaligned. | Bound every wait, make the job deadline shorter than queue visibility, and ensure cancellation reaches browser operations. |
Performance and reliability trade-offs
Short timeouts improve queue throughput but can reject slow yet valid pages; long timeouts reduce false failures at the cost of occupied workers and delayed results. Measure your own target mix and tune by phase. Avoid treating a single site’s behavior as a universal baseline.

Waiting for every network request can add unpredictable latency on pages with analytics, polling, or persistent connections. Waiting only for document readiness is faster but can capture before client-rendered content appears. A targeted selector or bounded post-navigation wait is often a better compromise when the required content is known.
Retries also trade recovery probability for additional work. Backoff with jitter reduces synchronized retry bursts, while a strict attempt cap protects the service and the target. Keep browser-level retries, API-client retries, and queue redelivery coordinated; otherwise one logical job may be attempted many times without a clear limit.
Or skip the browser setup
If you would rather not operate browser workers and classify every capture yourself, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Its free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I retry every screenshot timeout?
No. Retry only when the operation is safe to repeat and the failure may be transient; cap attempts and respect the overall deadline.
Does a 503 mean the screenshot API request failed at the network layer?
Not necessarily. A 503 is an HTTP response. The browser may have completed the request even though the target server reported an error.
What should I give a support team for a failed capture?
Share the correlation ID, failure category, attempt timing, browser or worker identifier, and response status if present; remove credentials and sensitive URL data.
