Handle a JavaScript dialog in Puppeteer by registering a dialog event listener on the page before the action that triggers it, then await dialog.accept() or dialog.dismiss(). For a prompt, pass the text to enter to accept(). Choose the response to match the behavior your test is meant to exercise.
Listen for the dialog before triggering it
Puppeteer emits a Dialog instance on the relevant Page through its dialog event. Install the listener before navigation, a click, or page script execution that may open a dialog; otherwise the event may arrive before your handler is ready.
page.on('dialog', async dialog => {
console.log(dialog.type(), dialog.message());
if (dialog.type() === 'prompt') {
await dialog.accept('example response');
return;
}
await dialog.dismiss();
});
This example enters illustrative text for a prompt and dismisses other dialog types. Those are example choices, not universal defaults: use the response that represents the outcome under test. Puppeteer documents JavaScript dialogs including alert, prompt, confirm, and beforeunload (PageEvent reference).
Choose accept or dismiss for the test outcome
await dialog.accept()accepts the dialog and proceeds with its affirmative action where applicable.await dialog.dismiss()closes it without accepting, useful when testing a cancellation path.- For a prompt, use
await dialog.accept('text to enter')to submit a value. The string is ignored for non-prompt dialog types.
Both methods return promises, so await the chosen response. An alert has no choice of entered text; a prompt may need one; and a confirmation or beforeunload flow should be accepted or dismissed according to what the test is verifying. See the official accept() and dismiss() references.

Inspect dialog details when behavior depends on its content
Use the Dialog methods to branch on type or record useful diagnostics:
dialog.type()returns the dialog type.dialog.message()returns the displayed message.dialog.defaultValue()returns a prompt’s default value, or an empty string for a non-prompt dialog.
For example, a test can use the prompt’s default as its submitted value rather than hard-coding a separate string:

page.on('dialog', async dialog => {
if (dialog.type() === 'prompt') {
await dialog.accept(dialog.defaultValue());
return;
}
await dialog.dismiss();
});
Use this only when accepting the default is the behavior you intend to test. Method behavior is described in Puppeteer’s official type(), message(), and defaultValue() references.
Run a complete example
This example launches Puppeteer, attaches a handler before running page code, triggers a prompt, and closes the browser after the page action finishes. It demonstrates the event flow; replace the response and page action with the scenario your test needs.

Install the puppeteer package using your package manager and module style. The Puppeteer project distinguishes puppeteer, which downloads a compatible Chrome during installation, from puppeteer-core, which does not download Chrome. If package install scripts are blocked in your environment, the browser may need to be installed explicitly. Follow the current setup guidance on the Puppeteer project site; API references are rolling, so check the documentation matching your installed version.
Troubleshoot dialog handling
- The page action appears stuck: a dialog is likely still open. Ensure a listener handles it and that the handler awaits
accept()ordismiss(). - The handler does not run: attach it to the correct
Pagebefore the action that opens the dialog. A listener added afterward can miss the event. - A prompt submits the wrong value: pass the intended string to
accept(promptText), or inspectdefaultValue()if the test should use the displayed default. - A confirmation follows the wrong path: choose accept or dismiss based on whether the test is checking confirmation or cancellation; do not use one response indiscriminately for every dialog.
- Puppeteer cannot launch Chrome: distinguish dialog handling from browser installation. Check whether your setup uses
puppeteerorpuppeteer-coreand follow the project’s browser installation guidance.
