Hall-effect and TMR sticks use magnetic sensing instead, avoiding wear at that resistive contact. That difference can matter for long-term wear, but it does not make a complete controller drift-proof: calibration, firmware, mechanical centering and other parts of the assembly still affect how a stick behaves.
How each controller stick senses movement
A stick has two jobs: move physically and report its position to the controller. The sensor converts that movement into an electrical signal the controller can interpret. The three terms describe the sensing method, not the entire stick assembly or a guarantee of how a controller will feel.
Potentiometer: a moving resistive contact
A potentiometer measures stick movement through a change in resistance as a moving contact travels along a resistive element. Because sensing depends on that contact and track, they can wear. The basic operation of potentiometer-based sensing differs from magnetic sensing described by Texas Instruments’ joystick design application note.
Hall effect: sensing a magnetic field
A Hall-effect stick uses a magnet and a sensor to detect changes in the magnetic field as the stick moves. It does not need a moving contact rubbing against a potentiometer’s resistive sensing track. Texas Instruments’ application note on Hall-effect joystick design also discusses device variation and temperature drift, which can affect calibration and signal processing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
TMR: a different magnetic sensing effect
TMR stands for tunnel magnetoresistance. Like Hall-effect designs, TMR sticks use magnetic sensing rather than the potentiometer’s moving resistive contact, but TMR is a distinct sensor technology. SCUF’s support FAQ treats Hall-effect and TMR thumbsticks as separate approaches, while GameSir’s technology overview describes its TMR approach as precise and low power. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements comparing finished controllers.
Does magnetic sensing prevent stick drift?
Magnetic designs avoid wear at the potentiometer’s resistive sensing contact. That is a specific durability advantage—not proof that a controller with Hall-effect or TMR sticks can never develop drift. A stick’s reported position also depends on sensor behavior, calibration, firmware and the assembly’s mechanical centering. Texas Instruments’ discussion of variation and temperature drift in Hall-effect joystick design shows why a sensor’s sensing method alone cannot guarantee perfect readings.

Drift is a symptom: the controller registers input when the stick is meant to be at rest. The sensor type can affect one potential source of wear, but it does not establish the condition of every other component or how the controller processes small signals.
Hall effect vs. TMR: what is established?
Both are magnetic sensing methods, but the available sources do not establish a universal performance winner for controller use. They do not provide controlled, independent comparisons of Hall-effect and TMR sticks for accuracy, latency or whole-controller battery life. GameSir’s descriptions of TMR as precise and low power should therefore be read as its claims about its technology, not as proof that every TMR controller outperforms every Hall-effect model.

TechRadar notes that sensitivity depends on calibration and firmware as well as the sensor; its August 15, 2026 comparison is useful context, not a controlled controller test. Do not infer a noticeable gameplay or battery-life improvement from “TMR” alone.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Calibration: Check whether the controller offers a calibration process and how it handles sensor variation.
- Dead zones and firmware: Look for how small stick movements are interpreted. Dead-zone settings in the controller or game can affect whether a small signal registers.
- Mechanical feel: Stick tension, centering and return-to-center behavior are separate from the sensor technology. Verify these traits for the specific model rather than assuming they follow from Hall effect or TMR.
- Repairability: Check whether the stick module is replaceable and confirm compatibility with the exact controller model and revision. A sensor type alone does not identify a compatible replacement.
- Platform support and price: Confirm the controller works with your platform and compare the price of the specific products available to you; the sensing method does not establish either.
Which stick type should you choose?
If avoiding wear at a potentiometer’s resistive sensing contact is your priority, Hall-effect and TMR designs address that particular wear point. Between those two, the sources do not support choosing one as a universal winner for accuracy, latency or battery life. For practical use, model-specific calibration, firmware, dead-zone behavior, feel, repair options and compatibility matter alongside the sensor technology.
