A Hackaday.io profile gives visitors context about who you are and connects them to hardware projects you have created or contributed to. The platform is built around publishing and exploring projects, sharing progress, and collaborating—not around personal bios alone.

What is Hackaday.io?

Hackaday.io describes itself as a collaborative hardware development community and an online repository for open-hardware projects. Its homepage says the site has “over a million members”; that is the platform’s own undated claim, not an independently verified current count. The site is organized around discovering projects, documenting builds, collaborating with teammates, and getting feedback from other members. Hackaday.io

The directory spans topics such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, home automation, 3D printers, robotics, electric vehicles, amateur radio, CNC, and programmable logic. These categories show the range of work represented, not how active or high-quality any category is. The directory identifies Mouser Electronics as curator of its RF & Wireless Projects category. What does a Hackaday.io profile do?

A profile provides an introduction to the person behind the builds and gathers project activity associated with their account. Hackaday.io’s published help material describes profile details such as a username with a vanity URL, location, short bio, tags, and links to external profiles. It also says projects a person creates or contributes to can appear on their profile, while project pages identify contributors. That guidance dates to 2014 and 2016, so exact field names and controls may have changed. Hackaday.io help material

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Think of the profile as the map to your work, and each project page as a place to explain a particular build. A profile can help a visitor understand your interests and find related work; it does not replace the technical detail of a project page or serve as a requirement for building hardware.

What should you put on your profile?

  • A recognizable username and useful context: A short bio and location can help other members understand who you are and what kinds of projects interest you.
  • Tags: The published guidance describes tags as a way for people to find users. Choose terms that accurately describe your interests or skills.
  • External profile links: Link to relevant accounts or sites where visitors can see more of your work.
  • Project connections: Create or contribute to project pages so your work is associated with your account. Identify collaborators accurately on shared work.
  • Brief project showcases: The help material describes “Things I’ve Built” as a lightweight way to show work that does not have enough detail for a full project page, using a small image and short summary.

Because the detailed profile guidance is historical, treat these as documented profile practices rather than a guarantee that every label or option appears unchanged in the current interface. Hackaday.io profile and project guidance

When should you use a full project page?

Use a full project page when readers need more than a quick glimpse: for example, when you want to show how a build developed, what parts it uses, or how someone might reproduce it. Hackaday.io describes project pages as supporting details, progress logs, component lists, step-by-step instructions, media, discussion, and team contributions. The actual content depends on what the project’s creators choose to publish. Hackaday.io project help material

A brief “Things I’ve Built” entry suits a smaller showcase when you have a project to mention but not enough documentation for a full write-up. The two approaches are complementary: the short entry introduces the work, while a project page can hold its fuller record.

How do projects and collaboration fit together?

Project pages can make collaboration visible through team contributions, updates, and discussion. Hackaday.io’s homepage also highlights private collaboration spaces for project teams and feedback from the wider community. Whether a given page has logs, instructions, comments, or a named team depends on what its creators publish.

For someone looking to collaborate, browse projects in relevant categories, read their updates, and use the available discussion or community channels to make a specific, informed connection. A profile can help others see your interests and related work, but the site’s descriptions do not promise that a profile will attract collaborators or that every project is open to contributions.

What can you explore on Hackaday.io?

The project directory lets readers browse by hardware subject, while the discovery page surfaces projects and community resources. The homepage also points to community chat groups and a hackerspace finder. Featured projects and other front-page selections can change, so treat them as current showcases rather than a permanent list. Visit Hackaday.io

Can developers use Hackaday.io data?

Hackaday’s developer documentation describes API endpoints for projects, user profiles, comments, contests, events, courses, and search. It says public data is available through GET endpoints, while posting requires signing in and using the website; it also says there is no official SDK. These implementation details can change, so check the Hackaday developer documentation for the current interface before building an integration.
