For an SDR YouTube Live stream, H.264 is a dependable choice if it fits your existing encoder workflow and you can meet YouTube’s recommended bitrate with upload headroom. HEVC is also supported, and it is required for YouTube Live HDR under the platform’s current guidance. Before switching, check your encoder’s codec and protocol support, bitrate, and tolerance for HLS latency.
H.264 and HEVC on YouTube Live
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among the codecs supported by its general RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. Its HLS documentation also supports HEVC. YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into output formats for viewers using different devices and network conditions, so creators send an ingest stream rather than encoding every viewer rendition themselves.
YouTube’s bitrate guidance recommends lower ingest bitrates for H.265/AV1 than for H.264 at the listed resolutions and frame rates. These are platform configuration recommendations, not results of a controlled test proving that HEVC always produces the same or better visual quality at a given bitrate.

The following selected values are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates. For each resolution and frame rate, the table compares the H.265/AV1 recommendation with the H.264 recommendation.

Source: YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026. The recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not a guarantee of a particular image quality. YouTube also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and RTMPS for conventional streaming. Verify current settings before a production broadcast.
When to choose H.264 or HEVC
| Situation | Practical choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SDR stream with an established encoder workflow | H.264 is a dependable option | Confirm that your upload can sustain YouTube’s recommended bitrate with headroom. |
| HDR stream to YouTube Live | HEVC is required by YouTube’s current HDR guidance | Confirm compatible HDR source, encoder, bit depth, color metadata, and HLS support. |
| Considering a codec change for bitrate reasons | Compare the recommended ingest settings for both codecs | Check exact encoder support, protocol, upload capacity, and stream health in a test. |
There is no universal visual-quality winner established by the official guidance cited here. YouTube publishes codec support and recommended bitrates, but these sources do not provide a controlled H.264-versus-HEVC quality test under matched conditions.

HDR, HLS, and latency
YouTube Help states: “At this time, HDR streaming to YouTube is only supported with the H.265 (HEVC) video codec.” Its HDR instructions require compatible HDR content and an encoder that supports the necessary configuration, including 10-bit video and BT.2020 color metadata, with PQ/ST 2084 or HLG according to the source.
YouTube’s documented HDR setup uses HLS. HLS supports HEVC and H.264, but YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments; ultra-low latency is unavailable with HLS. HDR capability therefore comes with protocol and latency considerations. Check YouTube’s current HDR help and your encoder’s documentation before configuring a production stream.

How to choose and test your setup
- Decide whether the broadcast is SDR or HDR. For YouTube Live HDR, plan on HEVC and the documented HLS workflow.
- Check that your encoder supports the exact codec, profile, bit depth, color metadata, and protocol you need.
- Compare your upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, leaving headroom for a stable connection.
- For conventional streaming, consider YouTube’s RTMPS guidance; if using HLS, account for its higher latency.
- Before the event, test a representative stream with motion and audio, then monitor stream health during the broadcast.
FAQ
Can I stream HDR to YouTube Live with H.264?
No. YouTube’s current HDR guidance says HDR streaming is only supported with H.265/HEVC. It also requires compatible HDR content and encoder settings, and documents an HLS workflow.
Does YouTube Live support HEVC over HLS?
Yes. YouTube’s HLS documentation supports HEVC. HLS has higher latency than RTMP, and ultra-low latency is unavailable when using HLS.
