For a pre-recorded video sent to a YouTube Live event, either H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) can work if your encoder or relay supports it. Choose the ingest codec based on the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation, your available upload bandwidth, and your workflow. For HDR live streaming, YouTube’s dedicated guidance calls for HEVC/H.265 and has additional requirements.
Does YouTube Live accept H.264 and H.265?
Yes. YouTube lists both H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) as supported live ingest codecs, alongside AV1. In this comparison, “ingest” means the encoded stream your software or hardware sends to YouTube—not the codec every viewer will receive. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the ingest choice does not guarantee a particular playback codec. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
This applies when an encoder or relay plays pre-recorded footage and sends it to a YouTube Live event. It is different from uploading a finished file as a regular video: YouTube’s separate upload recommendations specify H.264 for uploads, but those settings are not the live ingest recommendations. See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations.
What bitrate should you use?
Use YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate for the outgoing codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually plan to send. The values below are YouTube recommendations, not results from a controlled visual-quality test.

| Incoming resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
These selected figures come from YouTube Help’s current guidance accessed in 2026. Check the full YouTube table for the exact resolution and frame rate you intend to use, including its minimum rates; do not extrapolate from the examples. YouTube also specifies CBR bitrate encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
Fit the bitrate to your connection
Your available upstream bandwidth must cover the stream’s total bitrate, and YouTube advises leaving network headroom rather than using all available upload capacity. If the connection is unstable or shared, a lower supported resolution or frame rate may be more dependable than targeting the highest row. Review YouTube’s live encoder settings and network setup tips.

How to choose between H.264 and H.265
- Check encoder or relay support first. YouTube’s acceptance of a codec does not mean your particular streaming software, hardware encoder, or pre-recorded-video relay supports the codec-and-protocol combination you want to send.
- Match the outgoing format. Pick the resolution and frame rate for the live stream, then use YouTube’s corresponding bitrate recommendation for H.264 or H.265.
- Account for upload bandwidth. The selected bitrate must fit the stable upstream capacity available to the encoder, with headroom.
- Separate SDR from HDR. HDR has a distinct setup; do not treat the standard live bitrate table as a complete HDR recipe.
- Set expectations about viewers. YouTube transcodes live ingest for playback, so the codec sent by the encoder is not necessarily the codec used on a viewer’s device.
YouTube’s recommendations give H.265 lower ingest bitrates than H.264 for the listed matching formats. They do not establish that H.265 always looks better at the same bitrate for every source or relay configuration, nor do they provide a universal controlled quality comparison for pre-recorded live workflows.
What changes for HDR live streaming?
For HDR live, YouTube’s dedicated guidance requires HEVC/H.265, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color, and HLS output. This is a specific workflow with transport and playlist requirements; using H.265 alone does not make a stream HDR-ready. Follow YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance for the implementation details. YouTube’s general encoder page also says it recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR, but consult the dedicated HDR instructions for the required setup.

How to apply the settings to pre-recorded footage
- Choose the playback workflow. Use an encoder or relay that plays the recording and sends a live feed to your YouTube Live event. Confirm that it supports the codec and protocol you plan to use; platform support alone does not verify a particular product.
- Set the outgoing codec and format. Select H.264 or H.265, then set the intended resolution and frame rate. For HDR, follow YouTube’s separate HEVC/HLS requirements.
- Set the ingest bitrate. Use the matching row in YouTube’s current live table and select CBR. Check the full table for your exact format and its minimum rate rather than guessing between examples.
- Set keyframes. Use a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds, following YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Check the network and test the actual path. Leave upstream bandwidth headroom, then verify the encoder-to-YouTube stream and watch the live output. A successful codec selection in an encoder does not by itself confirm that the relay, network, and YouTube event are working together.
Common problems and what to check
- The relay will not start with H.265: Verify the relay’s own codec and protocol support. YouTube accepting HEVC does not establish compatibility in a specific third-party service.
- The stream buffers, drops, or appears unstable: Check whether total outgoing bitrate exceeds dependable upload capacity. Reduce the target format or bitrate in line with YouTube’s supported guidance and retest with network headroom.
- Bitrate guidance seems inconsistent: Confirm you are looking at live ingest settings, not YouTube’s upload recommendations for regular videos. Then match codec, resolution, and frame rate to the correct live-table row.
- HDR is not appearing as expected: Check all dedicated HDR requirements—HEVC, 10-bit, BT.2020, HLS, and the required transport and playlist configuration—rather than changing only the codec.
- Viewers report different playback formats: That can reflect YouTube’s transcoding for different devices and networks. The encoder’s ingest codec does not determine every viewer’s output codec.
