For a typical SDR YouTube upload, choose H.264: it is YouTube’s named recommended video codec for general uploads. Choose H.265/HEVC when you are exporting genuine HDR and your editing workflow preserves the HDR color information correctly. YouTube’s published upload guidance does not specify a different codec rule for creators in India.
H.264 or H.265: which should you use?
For ordinary SDR videos, use H.264
YouTube’s general recommended upload settings name H.264. For a standard dynamic range (SDR) video, export a progressive MP4 using H.264 and follow the guidance for frame rate, bitrate, and SDR color space. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings are the practical default.
For genuine HDR, consider H.265
For an HDR master, YouTube recommends HEVC/H.265, AV1, and VP9 Profile 2. H.265 is therefore a reasonable HDR export choice when your source, editor, and export settings preserve HDR correctly; it is not automatically better for every YouTube video. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for 10-bit or 12-bit color depth, Rec. 2020 primaries, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Review YouTube’s HDR upload requirements and retain the correct HDR metadata and color signaling through export.

H.264 can work for HDR, with a caveat
YouTube says H.264 10-bit can work for HDR, but may require very high bitrates, which can mean longer uploads and processing. The guidance does not give a percentage by which H.265 will reduce file size, so do not assume a fixed saving when choosing between them.

Does YouTube support H.265 uploads in India?
YouTube’s published upload guidance is general platform guidance and does not state a separate India-specific codec rule for pre-recorded uploads. It recommends H.264 for general uploads and identifies H.265 among its HDR options. The available guidance also does not establish that Indian viewers’ network conditions require one of these codecs over the other.
Choose according to the video’s dynamic range and your export workflow, not the creator’s location. If your video is SDR, use the H.264 general recommendation; if it is HDR, use a supported HDR codec and preserve its color characteristics.

Container, codec, and encoding characteristics
- Container: MP4.
- Video codec: H.264 for the general SDR recommendation.
- Scan and profile: Progressive scan and High Profile.
- Compression structure: Two consecutive B frames, a closed GOP, and CABAC.
- Rate control and chroma: Variable bitrate and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio in its upload guidance.
- SDR color: YouTube recommends BT.709.
Keep the exported frame rate the same as the recording frame rate. YouTube’s guidance states: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” The upload settings page provides the full encoding recommendations.
Why live-stream settings are different
This decision concerns an already-recorded video file. YouTube Live uses a separate encoder and ingestion workflow: its live guidance permits H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 and gives bitrate settings for live transmission. Those live bitrate figures are not targets for exporting a pre-recorded upload. HDR live streaming also has its own guidance. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and HDR video guidance for their respective workflows.

Common export and upload problems
- Color looks washed out or wrong: Check that the export matches the source’s SDR or HDR color space. For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709; for HDR, preserve the appropriate Rec. 2020 primaries, PQ or HLG transfer, and HDR metadata.
- Motion looks uneven: Confirm that the export uses the same frame rate as the recording rather than converting it unnecessarily.
- HDR upload takes a long time: If you exported HDR as H.264 10-bit, YouTube notes that very high bitrates may be needed, with longer upload and processing as a possible consequence.
- Video or audio fails to process or plays incorrectly: Check the file against YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings, then consult its troubleshooting guide for upload audio or video issues.
Pre-recorded uploads versus a 24/7 YouTube stream
Codec choice determines how to encode a video file; it does not keep a YouTube live stream running. If your goal is to loop uploaded recordings as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud rather than requiring a computer at home to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not going live from a camera. To start, create a StreamNeo account.
