For a typical H.264 stream to YouTube Live, use RTMPS, CBR (constant bitrate), and a 2-second keyframe interval. Set bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you are actually sending, then confirm your upload connection can sustain the video and audio bitrates with roughly 20% headroom. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264.
Recommended H.264 settings at a glance
| Setting | Recommended value |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension of RTMP |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps; choose a rate your content and connection can sustain |
| Scan and pixels | Progressive scan; square pixels |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| H.264 profile details | Two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps |
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codec options and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. The values above summarize its H.264 and general encoder guidance; check the encoder controls available in your software because labels and access to advanced settings differ.
Choose an H.264 bitrate for your resolution and frame rate
The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 live-stream minimum and recommended bitrates, in Mbps, for the listed ingest resolution and frame rate. Aim for the recommended value if your connection can reliably sustain it. The minimum is not a guarantee of equal image quality across different scenes.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, use 17 Mbps as the H.264 target for 1080p60 or 14 Mbps for 1080p30 when the connection has enough reliable upload capacity. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate in YouTube’s table. If your upload is inconsistent, lowering resolution or frame rate can be more dependable than selecting a high target that the connection cannot maintain.

Why CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval matter
CBR instead of VBR
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding. A stable bitrate makes the outgoing stream more predictable for the connection and ingest path. Select CBR in your encoder rather than variable bitrate (VBR) when both options are available.
Keyframes
YouTube Help states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Set the interval to 2 seconds where your encoder lets you specify it. If the setting is expressed in frames rather than seconds, convert using your frame rate: at 30 fps, 2 seconds is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames.
Protocol and advanced H.264 options
Choose RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends it as the secure version of RTMP. For SDR, its guidance lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit color along with progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Set these only if your encoder exposes the options; avoid changing settings you cannot verify.

Make sure your upload connection can carry the stream
The video bitrate is not the whole network requirement: audio and other stream overhead also use upload capacity. YouTube advises that total streaming bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. A shared network may provide less upload capacity than a speed test suggests at another time or for another device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Run an upload speed test from the network and location you will use to stream.
- Compare stable available upload capacity with the total stream bitrate, including audio, and keep about 20% headroom.
- If the connection cannot reliably carry the recommended target, reduce the outgoing resolution or frame rate and use its corresponding bitrate row.
- Prefer a reliable connection; a connectivity disruption can interrupt the stream.
Preflight the encoder and test before going live
- In your encoder: set the output resolution and frame rate, H.264, CBR, the bitrate from the table, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Choose RTMPS if offered.
- In YouTube Live Control Room: configure the stream with the matching ingest settings and use the stream key associated with that broadcast. Treat the key as private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Run a representative test: include the audio and the kind of movement or scene changes expected in the actual event. Confirm the Live Control Room preview appears and check the stream-health messages.
- During the broadcast: monitor stream health and messages. If the connection struggles, lower the bitrate or output resolution/frame rate rather than continuing with settings that exceed reliable upload capacity.
This checklist applies YouTube’s encoder and streaming advice; it is not a claim of independent performance testing.
HDR is a separate codec decision
Do not treat H.264 as YouTube’s HDR recommendation. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.265 (HEVC) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For SDR, the H.264 settings and Rec. 709 guidance above apply.

Latency and 4K trade-offs
YouTube says 4K/2160 live streams cannot use its low-latency optimization and are set to normal latency. For other streams, lower latency can improve interaction timing but may mean more playback buffering. Choose a latency mode based on how important real-time interaction is relative to playback stability.
Troubleshooting common H.264 live-stream problems
Stream health reports connection or bitrate trouble
The encoder may be sending more data than the connection can sustain, or the available upload may have fallen because the network is shared. Check the total bitrate and current upload capacity, restore headroom, and lower the stream bitrate or output resolution/frame rate if needed.
The stream looks soft or blocky
Check that the encoder is set to the intended resolution and frame rate, and that its bitrate matches YouTube’s recommended value for that combination where the connection allows. A minimum bitrate is not the recommended target, and bitrate alone cannot compensate for unreliable upload capacity.

The stream starts but does not appear in the preview
Confirm that the encoder is using the correct YouTube stream key and RTMP/RTMPS ingest configuration for the broadcast, then check Live Control Room messages and stream health. Keep the stream key private.
Video or audio settings do not match the guidance
Check the encoder’s output rather than assuming the project or source-media settings control the live feed. Verify resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval; for stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
