IEEE 802.11 is the technical standards family behind wireless local area networks (WLANs); Wi-Fi generation names are the simpler labels used for compatible products. For most buyers, the practical choice is between Wi-Fi 6/6E and Wi-Fi 7—but the right fit depends on supported bands, client devices, channel width, firmware support and local spectrum rules, not the generation number alone.

What does IEEE 802.11 mean?

IEEE 802.11 defines the media access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) specifications for wireless LANs. IEEE publishes a base standard and amendments, which use letter suffixes such as 802.11ax and 802.11be. The Wi-Fi Alliance maps several of those technical names to consumer-facing generation labels.

The family covers WLAN operation in unlicensed 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz spectrum. An 802.11 designation tells you which technical standard a device supports; a Wi-Fi generation label is usually easier to recognize on a router, adapter or device specification.

How do the 802.11 amendments map to Wi-Fi generations?

IEEE standard or amendment Wi-Fi label What it means for a user
802.11a/b/g Legacy Wi-Fi families Earlier generations associated with 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz operation. They matter chiefly when checking support for older equipment.
802.11n Wi-Fi 4 A generation commonly associated with MIMO and broader practical WLAN throughput.
802.11ac Wi-Fi 5 Focused on higher throughput in 5 GHz operation and wider channels.
802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 Designed to improve efficiency and average per-user throughput when many devices share a network.
802.11ax operating in 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E Wi-Fi 6 extended into the 6 GHz band; available channels and rules depend on the country.
802.11be Wi-Fi 7 The Extremely High Throughput amendment, with backward compatibility and operation across 1–7.250 GHz as specified by IEEE.

Wi-Fi 6E is not a separate IEEE amendment from Wi-Fi 6: both are based on 802.11ax. The “E” identifies Wi-Fi 6 operation extended into 6 GHz. Wi-Fi 7, by contrast, corresponds to the 802.11be amendment.

What changed with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E?

802.11ax was designed for environments where many devices share a wireless network. Its efficiency-oriented mechanisms include OFDMA, extended multi-user MIMO, target wake time and BSS coloring. These are intended to improve network operation under load; the generation name alone does not guarantee a particular speed or latency in a home or office.

Wi-Fi 6E uses the 6 GHz band in addition to the Wi-Fi 6 feature set. Whether a router or client can use that band depends on its hardware and the spectrum rules where it is being used. A Wi-Fi 6E router cannot make a device with no compatible 6 GHz radio use 6 GHz.

What does Wi-Fi 7’s 30 Gbit/s figure actually mean?

IEEE 802.11be-2024 is titled the Extremely High Throughput (EHT) amendment. Its specification defines a mode capable of supporting a maximum throughput of at least 30 Gbit/s, measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP), with carrier-frequency operation between 1 and 7.250 GHz. It also specifies backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE 802.11 devices operating in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands.

That 30 Gbit/s figure is a standards-level maximum for the specified mode at the MAC SAP. It is not a promised internet speed, application throughput or result every Wi-Fi 7 router and client will achieve. The connection also depends on the devices, their supported features, the network setup and available spectrum.

Will a Wi-Fi 7 router work with older devices?

802.11be specifies backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy 802.11-compliant devices, so a Wi-Fi 7 network is not limited to Wi-Fi 7 clients. An older device still connects according to the standard and bands it supports; it does not gain Wi-Fi 7 capabilities simply by joining a newer network. Check the router and client specifications for their supported bands and standards, especially if some devices are older or need a particular band.

Which 802.11 standard should you choose?

Choose Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E for an efficiency-focused upgrade

Wi-Fi 6 is a practical option to consider for a busy home or small office, where many devices share the network. Consider Wi-Fi 6E if you also need compatible 6 GHz operation and it is available under your country’s rules. Before buying, verify that the devices you want to use on 6 GHz actually support it.

Consider Wi-Fi 7 for capable clients and demanding use

Wi-Fi 7 is most relevant when several clients can use its capabilities and need high throughput or low latency. Compare specific router and client features rather than assuming all Wi-Fi 7 products support the same channel widths or performance modes. For a network with mostly older devices, the generation label alone may not justify an upgrade.

Check the whole connection, not just the router generation

For a new home or small-office deployment, compare these factors before choosing hardware:

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Band support: Confirm whether the router and each important client support 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz as needed.
  • Channel width and client support: Check the specific channel widths and features supported by both access point and client; the standard name does not establish that every device supports every option.
  • Regional spectrum rules: Verify which 6 GHz channels and operating rules apply in your country.
  • Firmware lifecycle: Check the manufacturer’s support information for ongoing firmware updates.
  • Wired backhaul: For a mesh or access-point deployment, consider whether the wired backhaul fits the network design.
  • Client radio: If a desktop lacks a compatible wireless radio, a USB Wi-Fi 6/6E adapter may add one; check its operating-system, band and driver support before purchase.

If you need protocol-level detail rather than a network upgrade decision, an IEEE standards handbook or reference manual is a better fit than shopping by Wi-Fi generation.

How current is the 802.11 standards family?

IEEE 802.11-2024 is an active consolidated revision. IEEE says amendments 1 through 7 published from 2021 to 2024 are incorporated in it. The IEEE working-group page records publication of 802.11be-2024 on July 22, 2025; 802.11bh-2024 on June 3, 2025; 802.11bk-2025 on September 5, 2025; and 802.11bf-2025 on September 26, 2025. These amendment identifiers and publication dates describe standards activity; they do not by themselves establish that a particular retail device implements an amendment.
