GTKTerm is a graphical terminal for communicating with devices over a serial port. Use it to view device output or send data to embedded boards, microcontrollers, modems, GPS receivers, and similar equipment; it is not a replacement for a shell terminal. Its settings must match the connected device, so confirm the serial parameters in that device’s documentation before connecting.
What GTKTerm does
The GTKTerm project describes the program as a graphical serial-port terminal for Linux and possibly other POSIX-compliant operating systems. It provides a window for opening a serial device, viewing incoming data, and sending data to it.
GTKTerm is useful when a device exposes a serial interface and you need an interactive connection. Its project README documents actions for sending a file, changing local echo, copying and pasting, clearing the display, and opening or closing the port. It also lists controls for sending a break and toggling DTR and RTS. These are serial-terminal functions, rather than ordinary shell commands.
What you need before connecting
- A serial connection: Use a built-in serial port or a USB-to-serial adapter if the computer lacks a suitable port. The adapter must match the target device’s electrical interface and connector; a USB plug alone does not establish compatibility.
- The device path: Identify the serial device exposed by Linux. The path varies with the computer and connected hardware. For example, a community Ubuntu setup with a USB-connected development board uses paths such as
/dev/ttyUSB0or/dev/ttyUSB1; those names are examples, not guarantees. See the Ubuntu board setup example. - Connection settings: Obtain the required speed (baud rate), data bits, stop bits, parity, and flow control from the target device’s manual or configuration. Matching all of them matters: a port can open successfully while the displayed data remains unreadable if the settings are wrong.
Configure GTKTerm for a serial device
The Debian testing GTKTerm manual documents configuration through options including --port for the serial device and --speed for its speed. It also lists options for data bits, stop bits, parity, and flow control. The manual lists /dev/ttyS0 as the default device and 115200 baud as the default speed. Treat both as defaults only: your device may use different values.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Connect the target device using a compatible serial connection, then determine the device path assigned by Linux.
- Open GTKTerm and choose the corresponding serial port. The GTKTerm project README lists keyboard shortcuts for opening and closing the port and configuring its settings.
- Set speed, data bits, stop bits, parity, and flow control to the values specified for the device. Do not assume the manual’s default speed is correct for your hardware.
- Open the port and check for expected output. If the connection opens but the output is missing or garbled, recheck the selected path and each communication setting against the device documentation.
The manual also documents options for line delay, waiting for a character, sending a file, and local echo. Local echo affects whether characters you type appear in GTKTerm’s display; it is separate from whether the connected device receives or responds to them.
Send data and manage the session
Once the port is configured, use GTKTerm’s terminal actions to interact with the device. The project README lists keyboard shortcuts for sending files, copying and pasting, clearing the screen and scrollback, sending a break, and toggling DTR and RTS, in addition to opening, closing, and configuring the port. Check the README’s shortcut list for the exact keys in the version you use.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The project also documents opening and closing the port through UNIX signals. That can be useful in scripts that coordinate a serial connection with another development task; it does not remove the need to configure the correct device and serial parameters.
RS485 flow control: an important timing caveat
GTKTerm’s project documentation warns that its RS485 flow-control feature is emulated in user space and may not react quickly enough for some configurations. Do not assume it will meet timing-sensitive requirements. For a setup that depends on reliable direction-control timing, the project suggests using a dedicated RS232-to-RS485 converter or a kernel-level driver instead. Verify that the complete hardware and driver path suits the application.

Install GTKTerm or build it from source
For a standard installation, check your Linux distribution’s package manager. Package availability and versions can vary by distribution and release, so the project’s source-build requirements do not establish which package is available on a particular system.
For a source build, the GTKTerm project lists GTK 3.12 or higher, VTE 0.40 or higher, intltool 0.40.0 or higher, and libgudev 229 or higher as build dependencies. Its instructions use Meson and Ninja and install the completed build with ninja -C build install. Follow the project README for the full configure and build sequence.

Is GTKTerm the right tool?
GTKTerm is a fit when you want a graphical Linux application to interact with a serial-connected device. Before choosing any serial tool, consider whether it supports your operating system and distribution, exposes the serial settings you need, can send files or control modem lines if your task requires those features, and handles RS485 direction control in a way appropriate to your timing needs. Also decide whether you need a graphical interface or a command-line workflow. The available GTKTerm documentation describes its own functions, but does not establish a current comparative ranking against other tools.
