Red Dead Redemption 2: a chase with consequences
RDR2.org’s guide lays out a chain rather than just a chase: a crime can attract a witness, lawmen investigate, identification can make the player wanted, and a bounty may persist after the active search ends. It also says lawmen may investigate a crime scene even when no witness has reported the crime. These details come from a fan-maintained guide, not a formal Rockstar specification.
How to end the active search
- Move out of the marked search area.
- Break lawmen’s line of sight.
- Wait for the wanted meter to empty.
Those steps reflect the RDR2.org guide’s account of escaping an active search. The immediate wanted state ending does not necessarily erase a bounty, which can leave bounty hunters as a later threat.
Do not confuse it with the earlier Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar’s official manual for the earlier Red Dead Redemption says, “You will remain Wanted as long as lawmen or civilians can see you. You can lose your Wanted Level by breaking their line of sight and hiding from the law.” It also warns, “Even if you manage to evade the law posses, deadly bounty hunters will come after you.” These quotes describe the earlier game, not RDR2; they should not be used as proof of RDR2 mechanics. The manual also says a bounty may be paid at a local Telegraph office or cleared with pardon letters.

Watch Dogs: hacking is the distinctive angle, not a verified chase formula
Ubisoft’s official description of Watch Dogs identifies Aiden Pearce as a hacker who can manipulate city systems, including traffic lights and the electrical grid, in Chicago. Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs 2 page describes Marcus Holloway and DedSec working against ctOS 2.0 in the San Francisco Bay Area. These premises make control of connected city infrastructure central to the games’ identity.
That distinction does not, by itself, prove how police are dispatched, how long they search, or what ends a pursuit. The official pages cited here establish the hacking premise, not a precise set of chase mechanics. It is safer to describe Watch Dogs as offering a technology-led setting for pursuit than to claim a specific escape rule or police AI behavior.

Which GTA game does the comparison mean?
“GTA” covers multiple games, so a precise comparison needs an installment. The available report about recognition indicators and escape tactics concerns GTA VI, not GTA V or the series as a whole. GamesRadar+ reported on August 27, 2026, that Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson described a GTA VI system in which a crime must be witnessed or trigger an alarm to be reported; the report also discusses recognition involving clothing and vehicles, and escape tactics such as switching cars or going on foot. Those are GTA VI-specific reported details, not evidence for GTA V.
For a broader comparison, the defensible distinction is the role each game emphasizes: GTA’s familiar wanted-level pursuit as action escalation; RDR2’s documented witness, investigation, wanted, and bounty chain; and Watch Dogs’ city-hacking premise. A detailed ranking of police realism or escape difficulty would require comparable, installment-specific mechanics that these sources do not establish.
