As of October 3, 2026, GTA VI has not been released, so nobody can verify how much of its map players can explore at the start or how access changes with story progress. Reporting on a recent Game Informer interview says the campaign will not take players everywhere across Leonida. That describes the story’s route—not what will be open during free roam. Rockstar lists November 19, 2026 as the announced release date.
What is known about GTA 6’s map?
Rockstar describes GTA VI as taking place in the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City among its locations. Its official GTA VI page and store listing establish the setting and announced release date; they do not provide a complete playable map or explain access rules.

TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 report on the Game Informer interview names six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. These are reported region names, not confirmation of a definitive map layout or when players can enter each place. The same report says Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut described the world as the biggest Rockstar has created “by some degree.” No area measurement is given, so that description does not establish a map size or playable percentage. Reporting on the Game Informer interview says the campaign will not take players to every part of the map. This indicates that the story’s mission route will cover less than the full world, but it does not establish whether players can visit places outside that route on their own.

- Story coverage: Which places missions require or take players to. Current reporting says the campaign will not visit everywhere.
- Free roam at the beginning: Which places players can travel to before making story progress. This has not been confirmed in the sources reviewed.
- Access after progress or completion: Whether story milestones unlock areas, or restrictions remain after the campaign. This has also not been confirmed.
Will missions unlock more of the map?
It is not known. The available reporting does not say that players must complete missions to unlock regions, that the whole map is open from the beginning, or that completing the story grants access to every area. The campaign’s not visiting every region is not evidence for any one of those mechanics.
That means comparisons with earlier GTA games cannot settle the question. Until Rockstar explains the access rules or the released game can be checked, claims about a mission-based unlock system—or unrestricted travel from the start—are speculation.

How much of Leonida can you explore?
No verified percentage is available for how much of Leonida the campaign visits or how much is accessible at launch. The reported six region names do not supply that missing figure, and no source reviewed establishes which of them will be reachable at the start of free roam.

Rockstar’s announced release date is November 19, 2026. Until the game is released or Rockstar publishes explicit access details, the most accurate answer is that the story will not take players everywhere, while free-roam access and any region unlocks remain unresolved.
