A third-party estimate put Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders at about $429 million through August 18, 2026. That is not an official Rockstar Games or Take-Two sales disclosure, and the available figures do not establish whether it is low. The estimate needs a comparable benchmark before it can support that judgment.
What the $429 million figure represents
TweakTown reported that Sensor Tower estimated 4.38 million GTA VI pre-orders through August 18, 2026, generating about $429 million in pre-order revenue. The same report estimated that 77% of pre-orders were for PlayStation 5 and 23% for Xbox Series X|S. These are third-party estimates, not figures published or confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date. Rockstar’s pre-order details list PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Rockstar Store, and select retailers where available. The official pages reviewed do not give a pre-order unit count or revenue total, so $429 million should not be described as money Rockstar has definitively earned.
Does $429 million mean pre-orders are low?
Not on the evidence available. A revenue figure by itself does not show whether demand is weak or strong. A fair comparison would need matching measurement periods, platform and geographic coverage, physical and digital sales coverage, edition mix, revenue definitions, and estimation methods. The available reporting does not provide a sufficiently documented comparable-title benchmark, so calling the total “low” would go beyond what the figures show.

Why a later estimate is not a clean update
LeonidaGuide later reported a Sensor Tower estimate of roughly 4.6 million copies. However, that report did not specify the estimate’s measurement cutoff. It therefore cannot be treated as a directly comparable updated count, and the difference from 4.38 million cannot be attributed to a particular cause. See LeonidaGuide’s report.
What buyers should know about the physical version
Rockstar says the boxed physical version contains a digital download code, not a disc. Its support page lists Standard and Ultimate Editions; the physical Ultimate Edition is unavailable, while physical Standard Edition owners can purchase the Ultimate upgrade separately after redeeming their code. Code redemption may depend on the region associated with the platform account. Check Rockstar’s edition and upgrade details before buying.
