It is not yet established that Grand Theft Auto VI is ineligible for The Game Awards 2026. Take-Two has scheduled the game’s launch for November 19, 2026, while The Game Awards says its nominees are coming in mid-November. The award’s currently available FAQ does not state the 2026 eligibility cutoff, so the late launch raises a timing question—not a confirmed ruling.
Is GTA 6 eligible for The Game Awards 2026?
There is no confirmed answer in the official 2026 eligibility material available as of October 4, 2026. The Game Awards has announced its ceremony for December 10 and says nominees are expected in mid-November. Take-Two’s announced November 19 launch date for GTA VI falls after that expected announcement, but a nominee-announcement date is not itself an eligibility deadline.

The official FAQ currently describes the previous cycle: it gives November 21, 2025, at 9 p.m. PT as that cycle’s cutoff and says games released after that date are eligible for the 2026 ceremony. That wording does not establish the cutoff for the 2026 eligibility cycle. It would be inaccurate to treat the prior-cycle date as a confirmed 2026 rule. Why the November timing still matters
The Game Awards FAQ says publishers and developers may provide review copies or digital redemption codes so voting outlets can evaluate games before ballot deadlines. That makes it possible for jurors to assess a title before its public release, but it does not prove that GTA VI will receive an exception or meet a deadline. The 2026 cutoff and any cycle-specific ballot instructions remain unverified in the available official material.

For most categories, the FAQ describes an international jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets. Each outlet submits an unranked ballot with five choices; the five titles appearing on the most ballots become nominees, with six or more possible in a tie. The separate winner process is weighted 90% jury and 10% public fan vote. Those winner-voting proportions do not determine the nomination cutoff. The Game Awards FAQ.
How the other 2026–27 award calendars compare
“Game of the Year” is not one universal award with one shared cutoff. Each program sets its own calendar, eligibility window, and entry process.

Golden Joystick is a separate, earlier public vote
The Golden Joystick dates make the practical outcome clearer than the open question around The Game Awards: its Ultimate Game of the Year voting window closes weeks before GTA VI’s announced release. Daniel Dawkins, content director of Golden Joystick Awards at Future, said the game was “set to launch a week after our live show.” That schedule means the game cannot be included in the public vote as currently set, regardless of The Game Awards’ eventual rules. BAFTA’s window includes the announced release date, with conditions
BAFTA’s 2027 Games Awards rules cover games released in the UK through November 19, 2026. Because GTA VI is scheduled for that final date, it falls within the stated date window if it releases in the UK as announced. Games releasing after July 31 have a November 6 entry deadline for forms and fees, and BAFTA’s Games Committee decides category eligibility.
