Short answer: Do not assume a GStreamer YouTube stream will resume when Airtel broadband comes back. The official rtmpsink and rtmp2sink references do not document a general automatic-reconnect setting. To recover reliably, your application must monitor the GStreamer bus, distinguish transient network failures from configuration errors, and reset or recreate the failed publishing output after connectivity returns. The right restart boundary depends on your pipeline.
Why the stream may stay stopped after broadband returns
A broadband outage can break the connection between your GStreamer publisher and YouTube. When the link returns, that does not guarantee the existing RTMP/RTMPS sink will reconnect or that the same YouTube broadcast will continue. The sink references describe sending FLV over RTMP, but do not establish a universal reconnect option or recovery sequence: GStreamer rtmpsink and GStreamer rtmp2sink.
The timing alone also does not prove Airtel caused the failure. The issue could be the access link, Wi-Fi, router or ONT, host networking, a GStreamer sink error, or YouTube ingestion. Check the GStreamer bus and debug output alongside stream health and error messages in YouTube Live Control Room. GStreamer’s GstPipeline documentation says listening to the bus is necessary to retrieve pipeline errors; otherwise, a pipeline might stop without indicating why.

There is no documented universal reconnect recipe for every source and pipeline. Treat reconnection as application logic: identify why output failed, wait for a transient network problem to clear, then reset or recreate the publishing output. Choose whether to restart the sink, publishing branch, or whole pipeline based on how your source, encoder, muxer, and sink are connected.

- Monitor the pipeline bus. Install a bus watch or poll the bus from the application’s main context. The bus carries messages from streaming threads to the application, including errors and state changes. See GstPipeline.
- Record and classify errors. When you receive
GST_MESSAGE_ERROR, capture the source element, error text, and debug details. Treat a transient connection failure differently from an invalid URL or key, missing plugin, or unsupported media format. Do not log or publish your actual YouTube stream key. - Recover only from errors your application can address. For a likely transient network failure, stop or tear down the failed publishing path cleanly. Wait for general connectivity to return, using a bounded backoff and retry limit or a health policy appropriate to your application. This is an engineering design based on GStreamer’s bus and error model, not a universal reconnect algorithm prescribed by GStreamer.
- Reset or recreate the output. Rebuild or reset the failed sink or publishing branch, or recreate the pipeline if that is the safe boundary for your design. Reuse upstream encoding and muxing only if their state and connections support it. The sink documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted continuation or preservation of the same live event.
- Verify recovery at YouTube. Check Live Control Room for stream health and incoming video and audio. A successful local state change is not proof that YouTube is receiving the stream.
Test this behavior in a controlled setup before relying on it for a live channel. Confirm what your application does for both a brief connection loss and a longer interruption; an automatic retry should not repeatedly restart on a permanent configuration or authentication error.
Do not confuse clock recovery with RTMP reconnection
GStreamer’s Basic tutorial 12: Streaming documents moving a pipeline from PAUSED back to PLAYING after GST_MESSAGE_CLOCK_LOST, so it can select a new clock. That guidance addresses clock recovery; it is not documented as a complete way to reconnect an outbound RTMP sink after a broadband outage.

Likewise, do not treat buffering as a cure for a total link outage in a live publisher without evidence that it fits your pipeline. The tutorial discusses buffering for network playback and distinguishes live sources in its example.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings and health
- Confirm the destination and key. Use the current RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. If you replace a key, update the application securely.
- Check protocol and connectivity errors. For connection timeout or SSL errors, YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says to confirm RTMPS is selected, verify the server URL, and ensure the encoder supports RTMPS; its help page also gives port 443 guidance where needed.
- Read the specific stream-health message. Live Control Room can help distinguish no data from the encoder from format or ingestion problems. Review the audio/video format and stream settings it reports rather than assuming every failure is the broadband link.
- Understand backup ingest correctly. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes primary and optional backup ingestion addresses and health status. A separately configured backup destination is not a mechanism that restarts a failed local GStreamer pipeline.
Pin down which part of the connection failed
Check the host’s network connectivity and local router or ONT status, then compare timestamps with GStreamer’s bus/debug messages and YouTube’s stream-health display. If the host is still offline, sink retries cannot publish anything. If the host is online but the sink reports an error, investigate that element and its destination settings. If YouTube reports an ingest or format problem, address the indicated setting rather than repeatedly restarting the broadband connection.

The available information does not establish Airtel-specific modem or ONT settings, a current regional outage, or a provider guarantee for this setup. For an ongoing provider-side fault, verify your connection and contact current Airtel support; do not infer a provider-specific cause from the stream stopping immediately after an outage.
