For a conventional H.264 loop stream, match the video bitrate to the resolution and frame rate, use CBR, and set x264enc’s keyframe interval to about two seconds: 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. For a non-interactive loop, YouTube’s normal latency mode is usually the sensible starting point. Encoder latency and YouTube viewer latency are separate settings, so changing one does not automatically change the other.

Choose the video bitrate for your resolution and frame rate

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends different H.264 ingest bitrates by resolution and frame rate. The figures below are video bitrates, not total bandwidth requirements; audio and reliable upload capacity are additional considerations. The table reflects YouTube’s guidance checked on October 3, 2026. Other codecs have different recommendations.

H.264 ingest resolution Frame rate Recommended video bitrate
2160p 60 fps 50 Mbps
2160p 30 fps 42 Mbps
1440p 60 fps 34 Mbps
1440p 30 fps 21 Mbps
1080p 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p 30 fps 8 Mbps
480p 30 fps 4 Mbps
360p 30 fps 3 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 live ingest rates, not a guarantee that a given connection or content will stream reliably. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. A detailed, fast-moving video can behave differently from a static test pattern, so test with material like the loop you intend to publish. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Set the corresponding x264enc bitrate

GStreamer’s x264enc bitrate property is in kbit/sec. For example, the YouTube recommendation of 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 corresponds to setting bitrate=14000; 17 Mbps at 1080p60 corresponds to bitrate=17000. Use the value for the actual output resolution and frame rate. The documented x264enc default is 2048 kbit/sec, which is not a YouTube-specific recommendation and may not suit your target.

Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends, and leave enough dependable upload capacity for the outgoing video and audio. A nominal connection speed alone does not establish that an end-to-end stream will be stable; validate the actual pipeline and check YouTube’s health indicators.

Set x264enc key-int-max for a two-second GOP

YouTube recommends a keyframe about every two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. GStreamer’s x264enc key-int-max is a maximum distance between keyframes measured in frames, not seconds. Set the output frame rate first, then translate two seconds into frames:

Output frame rate Two-second interval x264enc setting
30 fps 60 frames key-int-max=60
60 fps 120 frames key-int-max=120

Do not copy key-int-max=60 into a 60 fps pipeline if the goal is a two-second interval: that would be one second. The property’s value of zero means automatic, so it does not explicitly establish the desired interval. YouTube’s keyframe guidance and GStreamer’s property definition are documented in YouTube’s encoder settings and the GStreamer x264enc reference.

Distinguish encoder latency from YouTube viewer latency

Encoder buffering inside GStreamer

GStreamer’s x264enc documentation warns that default settings can buffer frames and add latency. It documents tune=zerolatency as a workaround, but also warns that it affects overall encoding quality. Treat it as a trade-off to evaluate with your content and pipeline, not a quality-neutral switch. Encoder buffering can also cause queues or other pipeline branches to fill and block; GStreamer discusses queue sizing and multiqueue arrangements as possible pipeline-level remedies. See the x264enc documentation.

Latency mode in YouTube Live

YouTube’s latency mode affects the viewer experience and buffering risk; it is not a substitute for tuning local encoder buffering.

YouTube mode Use case described by YouTube Important trade-off
Normal Streams where the creator does not plan to interact with the audience All resolutions and live features are supported
Low Some audience interaction; YouTube says most viewers experience less than 10 seconds 4K is not supported; the timing is a typical description, not a guarantee
Ultra-low Real-time interaction; YouTube says most viewers experience less than five seconds Buffering is more likely and 4K is not supported; the timing is not a guarantee

For a continuous scenic, music, or ambient loop without real-time interaction, normal latency is a practical default: reducing viewer delay is unlikely to help the program enough to justify added buffering risk. If you will respond to chat or run synchronized participation, consider low latency; ultra-low is for cases where immediacy matters more than the increased chance of buffering. These are applications of YouTube’s stated use cases, not promises about end-to-end delay. See YouTube’s live latency guidance.

Build the GStreamer pipeline around the source and available plugins

A typical topology for sending a loop to YouTube is:

  1. Loop or decode the source media.
  2. Convert video and set caps for the intended resolution and frame rate.
  3. Encode video as H.264 with the chosen bitrate and keyframe interval.
  4. Parse the H.264 stream.
  5. Decode or provide audio, then encode it as AAC.
  6. Multiplex audio and video into FLV and send the output to YouTube’s RTMP(S) ingest endpoint.

GStreamer’s flvmux multiplexes streams into FLV. The documented rtmpsink accepts a server URL through its location property and delivers data using RTMP. Do not assume that every installed sink or plugin supports secure RTMPS in the same way; confirm support in your installed build before selecting YouTube’s secure endpoint. Relevant references are the flvmux documentation and rtmpsink documentation. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.

The exact launch line depends on the source, GStreamer version, installed plugins, caps, audio path, and sink protocol support. Inspect the elements and properties available in your own installation rather than relying on a command that assumes a particular build. Keep your YouTube stream key private; do not expose it in a shared command, screenshot, log, or public configuration.

Audio and other encoder requirements

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its listed stereo target is 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps; its 5.1 target is 48 kHz at 384 Kbps and is supported only with AAC for RTMP/RTMPS. The guidance also lists progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC for H.264. Whether and how you can set every property depends on the GStreamer encoder and plugins installed. Consult the current YouTube encoder requirements and verify your local elements.

Preflight the loop and troubleshoot stream health

Before going live

  • Confirm that the output caps match the intended resolution and frame rate, and calculate the keyframe interval from that frame rate.
  • Use the H.264 video bitrate for the selected resolution and frame rate, with CBR and suitable audio settings.
  • Run a preflight using representative motion and audio rather than only a static image.
  • Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and stream; a configured bitrate alone cannot confirm reliable delivery.
  • Verify that your installed sink can reach the chosen RTMP or RTMPS endpoint, and protect the stream key.

Common problems and what to check

  • Video bitrate is too low or the picture degrades: compare the configured x264enc bitrate, in kbit/sec, with YouTube’s recommendation for the actual resolution and frame rate. Check the stream-health messages and test with representative motion.
  • Keyframe interval is wrong: check the frame rate in the output caps and convert the desired seconds to frames. At 60 fps, a two-second interval is 120 frames, not 60.
  • Latency remains high after changing YouTube’s mode: viewer latency and encoder buffering are different. Inspect x264enc buffering and pipeline queues as well as the YouTube mode; end-to-end delay also depends on ingest, network, and playback behavior.
  • Pipeline stalls or a branch blocks: encoder buffering can let queues fill. Review branch synchronization and queue sizing or multiqueue behavior; do not assume one universal queue setting applies to every pipeline.
  • Secure ingest does not connect: verify that the installed sink/plugin supports RTMPS and that the endpoint and stream key are correct. The documented RTMPSink behavior should not be generalized to every installed sink.
