To run a 24/7 YouTube stream from an Ubuntu or Debian VPS, install GStreamer’s command-line tools and the plug-ins that provide H.264 encoding, FLV muxing and RTMPS output. Build a pipeline that encodes a continuous source with x264enc, passes it through flvmux, and sends it to the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Choose a resolution and bitrate the VPS can sustain, then test and monitor it before relying on it continuously.
Install GStreamer and check the required elements
On Ubuntu or Debian, these package names are a practical starting point. Element availability can vary by distribution release and repository, so verify the actual VPS rather than assuming every package contains the same build.

GStreamer’s Linux installation guidance lists apt packages; its documentation places rtmpsink in Bad Plug-ins, flvmux in Good Plug-ins, and x264enc in Ugly Plug-ins.
Check the elements and their properties on the host with gst-inspect-1.0 before constructing a production pipeline:

What each element does
gst-launch-1.0runs a pipeline from the command line.x264encencodes raw video to H.264. Its software encoding load and latency depend on settings and available CPU.h264parseparses and normalizes the encoded H.264 stream before muxing.flvmuxcombines the encoded stream or streams into FLV;streamable=trueis intended for streaming output.rtmpsinksends the muxed output over an RTMP-compatible connection and uses librtmp. Build a basic video-only test pipeline
This example generates test video rather than playing your own recording. It is a starting point for checking that the installed elements negotiate and connect; it is not a production command verified on every VPS or GStreamer version.

rtmpsink location="<RTMPS_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"The example asks x264enc for 6,000 kbit/s; its bitrate property is in kbit/s. At 30 frames per second, key-int-max=60 is a 60-frame interval, or two seconds. Confirm property names, negotiated caps and the correct RTMPS URL form on the installed version and in YouTube Live Control Room. Replace videotestsrc with the live or looping source you actually intend to broadcast.

Add audio when the content needs it
A production stream with audio needs a separate audio branch: produce or read audio, encode it to a supported format such as AAC, and connect the encoded audio to a second input on flvmux. Do not leave a silent or disconnected audio branch in a command intended to provide sound. YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio and recommends 128 kbps for stereo AAC or MP3. For the specific GStreamer AAC element and its properties, inspect the encoder supplied by your distribution.
Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
YouTube recommends settings that suit the available connection, advises checking upload bitrate, and says to test with similar audio and motion while monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that must not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s resolution- and frame-rate-specific table rather than extrapolating beyond the examples below. These are YouTube’s H.264 guidance figures, not VPS performance measurements.

YouTube’s live encoder settings also recommends, for SDR, square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709, 8-bit depth, two B-frames and one reference frame. For stereo audio, its guidance gives 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for 5.1 audio, 48 kHz and 384 kbps, with AAC required for 5.1 over RTMP(S). YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewer formats.

Get the RTMPS endpoint and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and reveal or copy the RTMPS URL and stream key for the stream you are setting up.
- Use the secure RTMPS endpoint in the sink location, in the form supported by your installed sink and YouTube’s displayed URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its RTMPS instructions note that an SSL error can occur if you use
rtmpinstead ofrtmps, and advise checking the URL and port 443 if needed. - Keep the key secret. Avoid putting it in shell history, logs, screenshots or a public repository. Use a protected configuration or secret-handling method appropriate to your VPS and service manager.
Check VPS CPU and sustained outbound capacity
A 720p30 H.264 stream at YouTube’s recommended video bitrate sends 6 Mbps of video continuously, before audio and transport overhead. The VPS must encode roughly 30 frames each second without building an ever-growing processing backlog, and its network must sustain the outgoing stream. A software x264enc pipeline uses CPU; the sources do not establish a universal minimum vCPU count, and a low advertised price does not establish sustained throughput.
Before choosing a VPS plan, check the provider’s current documentation and terms for:
- Whether sustained outbound streaming is allowed and what egress or traffic charges apply.
- Available data-center location, sustained network policy and any bandwidth limits.
- vCPU allocation, throttling or other limits that could affect continuous software encoding.
- Restart behavior, support and service terms relevant to recovering a long-running process.
No provider, India-region capability, plan price, minimum CPU size or guaranteed uptime is established here. Confirm those details directly with the provider for the specific plan you are considering.

Test and keep the stream running
- Run a representative test using the intended source, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate and audio. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch CPU use and network output on the VPS, and look for dropped frames, pipeline errors or signs that encoding is falling behind.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health while the test is running. Test with similar audio and motion to what the real stream will contain.
- For continuous operation, run the pipeline under process supervision rather than relying on a foreground terminal session. Configure a restart path and alerting, and make sure the stream key remains protected.
A successful test shows how that VPS and configuration behave under the tested conditions; it does not prove that a provider guarantees uninterrupted YouTube availability.
Troubleshoot common pipeline and stream failures
