There is no single gst-launch-1.0 command that scans a folder, sorts its videos, plays them in order, and sends them to YouTube. Use a small GStreamer application to build a deterministic playlist and advance between files, then connect playback to an encoder, muxer, and YouTube ingest sink. The exact output chain depends on your files, installed GStreamer plugins, and the ingest protocol configured for your YouTube event.

How the pieces fit together

Treat the job as two parts: playlist control and live delivery. Your application chooses the next local file and feeds it to GStreamer for playback. A separate output path encodes or otherwise prepares the audio and video, packages them for the selected ingest protocol, and sends them to YouTube.

playbin is GStreamer’s high-level playback element. It accepts a URI, but it does not scan a folder, decide a filename order, or configure a YouTube broadcast on its own. A playlist controller must do those jobs.

Build a deterministic playlist

Choose the order explicitly

Decide what “in order” means before starting playback. You can sort filenames lexicographically, use a numbering convention, or maintain a separate playlist file. Do not rely on the order returned by a filesystem directory scan; it is not a reliable ordering rule. If filenames contain numbers, ordinary alphabetical sorting can put video10 before video2. Use natural numeric sorting or an explicit playlist when that matters.

Convert file paths to absolute URIs

Keep the ordered paths in application state and convert each one to an absolute file:// URI before assigning it to playbin. The uri property requires an absolute URI. Use a URI-escaping library rather than manually concatenating a path, particularly when filenames contain spaces or non-ASCII characters.

Advance through files with an application

Set the next URI before the current file ends

GStreamer’s playbin design includes an about-to-finish signal. In its handler, advance the playlist index and set the next file’s URI. This allows a handoff near the end of the current item; whether it is gapless depends on the media and pipeline. Only set a next URI when another playlist item exists.

Conceptually, the controller needs an ordered URI list, a current index, and a signal handler:

  1. Scan the selected directory and filter for supported media files.
  2. Sort the resulting paths according to the ordering rule you chose.
  3. Convert each path to an absolute file URI and assign the first URI to playbin.
  4. When about-to-finish fires, increment the index and assign the next URI.
  5. Handle bus errors and end-of-stream deliberately: report an error, advance if appropriate, restart the playlist, or stop the broadcast according to your intended behavior.

For more involved playlist behavior, GStreamer playback documentation also identifies decodebin as an option. A folder-scanning command by itself does not provide playlist indexing or end-of-file scheduling; those are application responsibilities.

  1. Decode the selected file’s audio and video streams.
  2. Convert video or resample audio when the chosen output format requires it.
  3. Encode video as H.264 when needed. GStreamer’s x264enc is one H.264 encoder option.
  4. Encode audio to a format accepted by the event’s YouTube ingest settings.
  5. Mux audio and video into FLV and send the muxed stream to rtmpsink.

This is a design outline, not a tested, universal pipeline string. Element names, caps, and links depend on the source codecs and formats, the installed plugins, and the output configuration. Check that your GStreamer build includes the required decoders, converters, encoders, muxer, and sink before assembling the graph.

If every file already has compatible encoded streams, stream-copy or remuxing may be possible. It is not safe to assume that arbitrary files will join cleanly: different codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, or audio layouts can make a continuous output unreliable. A consistent encode path is generally easier to validate when predictable output matters.

Encoder latency and output settings

GStreamer’s x264enc documentation warns that encoder settings, including defaults, can buffer frames and add latency. Tune and test against your needs rather than assuming a low-latency preset is always best; latency, image quality, CPU load, and stability trade off. For RTMP, use YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the settings shown for your event to choose supported resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and codecs. Do not copy settings from an HLS configuration into an RTMP graph.

Match the event’s ingest protocol

RTMP/RTMPS

RTMP is a continuous-stream route. GStreamer documents rtmpsink for sending to a streaming server and shows an FLV-muxed output path. Use the stream URL and protocol configured for the particular YouTube event, and keep the stream key secret. Confirm the event’s current accepted codecs and encoder settings in YouTube Live Control Room before broadcasting.

HLS

HLS is segment-based rather than the continuous FLV-over-RTMP path described above. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies MPEG-TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range playlist. It also lists supported formats and closed-GOP requirements, and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are HLS requirements; they do not describe an RTMP pipeline. Select the protocol configured for your event and build for that protocol.

Validate the files and pipeline before going live

Check your local installation and media

  • Verify that the chosen source, decoder, converter, encoder, muxer, and sink elements are installed in your GStreamer build.
  • Inspect representative files for video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, channel layout, and sample rate.
  • Check that the output caps and audio/video encoders match the YouTube event’s configured ingest settings.
  • Test the complete playlist and output path in a private or otherwise suitable validation stream, then review stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

Exact commands and element properties vary with operating system, GStreamer version, plugin set, source files, and selected ingest protocol. Validate using the same environment and media you intend to use for the broadcast. YouTube’s Live Streams API exposes ingest configuration details such as ingest type and primary or backup stream URLs, as well as health status that can help diagnose problems.

Troubleshoot common failures

The files play in an unexpected order

Cause: The application uses filesystem enumeration order or plain string sorting for numbered names. Fix: Define an explicit order, use natural numeric sorting for numbered filenames, or maintain a playlist file. Log the final ordered URI list before playback.

A file does not open or the playlist stops

Cause: The URI is not absolute or valid, a decoder is missing, or the application does not handle a bus error or end-of-stream. Fix: Generate absolute file URIs with a URI library, verify decoders for the file’s codecs, and log bus messages. Decide whether an error should skip the item, stop the broadcast, or trigger a retry.

YouTube does not accept the stream

Cause: The sink URL, stream key, ingest protocol, container, codec, or output settings do not match the event. Fix: Recheck the event configuration and current YouTube encoder guidance; use the RTMP/RTMPS chain only for an RTMP-based event and implement HLS’s segment rules only for an HLS event.

Playback has gaps or the output stutters

Cause: The next URI was set too late, files have incompatible stream properties, or encoding buffers or overloads the machine. Fix: Set the next URI in about-to-finish, test transitions between the actual files, inspect CPU use and encoder latency, and normalize output through a consistent encode path if stream-copy transitions are not reliable.

The stream starts but reports poor health

Cause: The output may not meet the event’s current format or bitrate settings, or the local system or network may not sustain it. Fix: Check YouTube Live Control Room health details, compare the actual output to the event configuration, and test the full setup before the intended broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo avoids maintaining a local GStreamer machine and playlist controller. Frequently Asked Questions

Can GStreamer loop the folder after the final video?

Yes, if your application resets the playlist index and assigns the first URI when it reaches the end; that loop policy is controller logic.

Can I use the same output graph for RTMP and HLS?

No. RTMP and HLS use different delivery and packaging requirements, so build for the protocol configured for the YouTube event.
