GrowsChat is Behan kumar’s rebuild of an earlier random-chat platform that he says struggled with media-hosting costs and inadequate rate limiting. His September 13, 2026 account describes a different set of product choices: disclose when a match is AI, let people enter real conversations without an account, add video-call safety controls, and replace user uploads with a built-in image and sticker library. These are the builder’s reported intentions and features, not independently verified results.
Why Behan kumar rebuilt the chat app
Kumar describes himself as a solo full-stack developer. He says the first random-chat platform failed mainly because hosting media was expensive and effective rate limiting was missing. His post does not give cost figures, abuse metrics, or other before-and-after measurements, so the scale of those problems—and whether the rebuild solved them—cannot be assessed from the account.
GrowsChat is presented as a rebuild shaped by those shortcomings, with particular attention to access, media, and safety. The details below reflect what Kumar says the product does; the post does not report independent testing or user outcomes. Read Kumar’s DEV Community post.

AI matching is disclosed
Kumar says users are told when they are talking to AI while the service looks for a real match. His concise principle is: “AI is always disclosed.” The post does not describe how disclosure appears in the interface or how long matching takes.

Real conversations do not require an account
The rebuild lets a user start a real conversation without creating an account. Kumar frames this as a way to make conversational access easier. The source does not specify what information is collected, how identity or repeat use is handled, or how account-free access interacts with moderation.
Video calls include stated safety controls
Kumar says video calls include a safety check and a one-tap way to end the call. These are described controls, not evidence that harmful behavior is prevented or that users have measured the experience as safer. The post does not provide details about reporting, enforcement, or safety outcomes.

Media comes from a built-in library
GrowsChat does not accept user-uploaded media, according to Kumar. Instead, it uses a situational image and sticker library. That choice directly addresses the earlier platform’s reported media-hosting burden, but the post does not quantify any savings or explain the library’s size, moderation process, or coverage of user needs.
The trade-off is clear at a high level: a curated library avoids open-ended user uploads, but gives users less freedom to share their own images. Kumar’s post asks readers whether the no-user-media approach makes sense; it does not establish broader user sentiment or demonstrate which side of the trade-off works better.

Conversation moods add an “Atmosphere” feature
Kumar also describes “Atmosphere,” a feature that provides themed moods for conversations. The post does not detail the available themes or report whether they change engagement or conversation quality.
Reported technology stack
Kumar names Next.js, MUI, Socket.IO, and Cloudflare Workers as the stack. His post gives no version numbers, architecture diagram, deployment details, or performance measurements. The technology list therefore identifies the reported tools, but is not enough to judge how the service is implemented or how well it performs.

What is known about the launch
The September 13, 2026 post says a Product Hunt launch was planned for September 16, 2026. It does not confirm whether the launch happened or how it went, and it does not establish GrowsChat’s current availability.
What the account establishes—and what it does not
Kumar’s account explains the problems he says motivated the rebuild and the product choices he says he made in response. It does not provide evidence that GrowsChat has lower costs, better abuse prevention, safer calls, or stronger user engagement than the earlier platform. Those remain unmeasured in the source.
