There is no objective, authoritative list of exactly 20 “great” engineers of the early 20th century. The available evidence supports six notable figures or collaborators across aeronautics, electrical engineering, and mechanical and industrial engineering—but not a defensible top-20 roster. This guide uses “early 20th century” to mean roughly 1900–1929 and focuses on engineering work that shaped that period, while flagging cases whose careers began earlier.

How to read a list of “great” engineers

“Great” is a judgment, not a measurable engineering category. A useful selection considers documented technical contribution, influence on engineering practice or society, and consequences that lasted. It should also distinguish an individual’s work from the teams, laboratories, companies, and infrastructure that helped make it possible.

The Institution of Civil Engineers has noted the difficulty of choosing the “best” engineers; IEEE Spectrum has likewise emphasized that engineering history includes teams and institutions as well as celebrated individuals. The six people below are therefore examples, not a ranking or a claim to represent every field, region, or contributor.

Six engineers and collaborators worth knowing

Person Field Documented contribution relevant to the period Scope note
Wilbur Wright Aeronautics Co-developed and tested ideas that led to the Wright brothers’ 1903 powered, controlled heavier-than-air flight. His achievement was collaborative; do not treat “the Wright brothers” as a single person.
Orville Wright Aeronautics Co-developed and tested ideas that led to the 1903 flight with Wilbur. Worked in partnership with Wilbur, with distinct skills and personalities.
Henry Ford Mechanical and industrial engineering Worked as a mechanical engineer at Edison Illuminating in Detroit and experimented with gasoline-engine designs. His engineering work began before 1900; distinguish it from the industrial and business scale for which he later became known.
Thomas Edison Electrical systems and invention Worked across electric lighting, telegraphy, recording, and communications, supported by laboratory and material infrastructure. Electric lighting depended on implementation and infrastructure, not one inventor alone.
Lewis H. Latimer Electric lighting, drafting, and patents Improved carbon filaments and contributed technical drawings, patent expertise, and practical explanations of incandescent lighting. His work is an example of a consequential contributor who can be overshadowed by better-known names.
Charles Proteus Steinmetz Electrical engineering Quantified magnetic hysteresis and developed a law that helped make transformer and motor design more predictable. His work illustrates how mathematical analysis can expand practical design capability.

Wilbur and Orville Wright: engineering flight together

The Wrights began serious aviation research in 1899, after Wilbur sought technical literature from the Smithsonian. They developed theories and tested ideas over several years. The National Park Service identifies their 1903 flight as the first powered, controlled flight of a heavier-than-air machine. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum stresses that the brothers had separate personalities and complementary roles; the evidence supports describing a partnership, not assigning the entire achievement to an undifferentiated “Wright brother.”

Wilbur captured the ambition behind the work in a May 13, 1900, letter to Octave Chanute: “For some years I have been afflicted with the belief that flight is possible to man.”

Henry Ford: from engineering work to industrial fame

ASME records that Ford worked as a mechanical engineer at Edison Illuminating in Detroit from 1891 to 1899 and experimented with gasoline-engine designs in his spare time. That technical experience is relevant to his later public identity, but it is not the same thing as the industrial and business scale for which he became famous. Keeping those parts of his career distinct gives a more accurate picture of Ford as an engineer.

Thomas Edison: invention depended on systems

Edison’s work ranged across electric lighting, telegraphy, recording, and communications inventions. ASME’s account also describes the laboratory and material infrastructure behind that work. That context matters: a functioning lighting system required more than a celebrated inventor’s idea. Its components had to be developed and put into use within a broader technical and organizational system.

Lewis H. Latimer: technical expertise beyond the famous names

IEEE Spectrum describes Latimer’s work on carbon filaments, patent drawings, and technical assistance. His 1890 book, Incandescent Electric Lighting: A Practical Description of the Edison System, explained how the system worked. IEEE Spectrum reports that his contributions helped make electric lighting more reliable and accessible.

IEEE Spectrum also quotes Mary Ann Hellrigel, an institutional historian and archivist, calling Latimer “the most prominent African American draftsman and inventor in early electric light, heat, and power technology.” That is Hellrigel’s characterization, reported by IEEE Spectrum—not a universal ranking. Latimer’s example makes clear why engineering histories should look beyond the names most often associated with an invention.

Charles Proteus Steinmetz: mathematics made electrical design more predictable

IEEE Spectrum describes Steinmetz’s work quantifying magnetic hysteresis and developing a law that supported more predictable transformer and motor design. His case shows a different kind of engineering contribution: mathematical analysis that helps practitioners understand and design real equipment, rather than a single headline-making machine.

Why this is not a definitive top 20

A list of 20 can create a false impression of completeness, especially when fields, countries, and kinds of engineering are unevenly represented. The examples above span aeronautics and electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineering, but they do not establish a global ranking or cover the profession as a whole. Engineering advances also depend on collaborators and institutions whose contributions may not be captured by a list of individual names.

The date boundary also needs care. Ford’s Edison Illuminating employment ran from 1891 to 1899, and the Wrights’ serious research began in 1899; their contributions connect earlier work to results in the new century. Latimer’s 1890 book documents expertise in incandescent lighting before the century turned. These figures are relevant to understanding early-20th-century engineering, but not every milestone in their careers falls within 1900–1929.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel is a useful contrast, not a member of a strict early-20th-century list: ASCE describes his work on railways, bridges, docks, ships, and a prefabricated hospital, including the Great Western Railway and Clifton Suspension Bridge, but he died in 1859. He belongs among influential predecessors whose work shaped later engineering, not among engineers active in the period defined here.

The National Academies Press book A Century of Innovation: Twenty Engineering Achievements that Transformed Our Lives (2003) surveys achievements across the century. It is useful context for the impact of engineering, but it is not a 20-person biography list.
