Graphical, block-based programming and text-based programming are different ways to represent instructions—not competing definitions of “real” coding. Blocks can make program structure visible and reduce the need to type syntax; text makes that syntax explicit. A 15-week study of 90 US high-school students found that starting with blocks did not leave students behind after they moved on to Java. That is a useful, bounded result, not proof that one route works best for every learner.

The strongest evidence discussed here concerns novice education and block-based tools such as Scratch. “Graphical programming” is broader: it can also mean node editors, dataflow systems, or diagrammatic tools. Findings about classroom block coding should not automatically be applied to all of them.

What is the difference between graphical and text-based programming?

Both approaches let a programmer express instructions, decisions, repetition, and data. The difference is how those instructions are entered and displayed.

Approach How code is represented What the learner must work with
Block-based graphical programming Instructions appear as visual blocks, often fitted together in a workspace. Program logic and the meaning of each block; depending on the tool, learners may type little or no syntax.
Text-based programming Instructions are written as text in a programming language, such as Java or Python. Program logic as well as the language’s syntax and the editor or other tools used to run and debug it.

Blocks can make a sequence or control structure easy to see and can prevent some typing mistakes. They do not remove the need to understand what the program does. Text code exposes the exact written form of instructions, but learners must also handle syntax. In either mode, they still need to reason about sequence, selection, repetition, state, and errors.

Does block-based programming help students learn?

A Raspberry Pi Foundation summary by Sue Sentance describes a study by David Weintrop involving 90 US high-school students aged 14–16. For five weeks, students learned the same objectives using block-based, text-based, or hybrid tools. All groups then studied Java for ten weeks.

  • After the initial five-week phase, the block-based group scored higher on the assessment.
  • At the end of the ten-week Java phase, assessment scores were roughly equivalent across groups.
  • The Foundation’s account says the students who began with blocks were not hampered in their later move to text-based programming.

The same account says the hybrid group had the strongest combined results when learning assessments and student attitudes were considered together. The summary also flags questions about teaching methods and tool-specific effects, and says longer-term research is needed. It does not establish that hybrid instruction is always best or that every block-based course will produce the same outcome. Read the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s study summary.

A 2019 meta-analysis examined block-based and text-based environments for novice learners, including education level, learning environment, and study duration as potential moderators. Its abstract listing does not provide a pooled effect size to quote here, so it should not be used to claim a single numerical advantage for either approach. View the meta-analysis abstract.

Which approach should a beginner learn first?

There is no evidence-backed rule that everyone should start with blocks, or that starting with text is better. Choose the representation to fit the learner, the learning goal, the task, and the support available.

  • For introducing core ideas: Blocks may help learners focus on what instructions do before syntax becomes a major concern.
  • For learning a particular text language: Text practice is necessary to become familiar with its syntax and the tools used to write and run it.
  • For more complex or open-ended tasks: Consider whether the chosen environment offers the flexibility the task requires; graphical tools vary, so do not assume every one has the same limits.
  • For learners changing tools or representations: Make the correspondences between a visible structure and its textual form explicit where possible, and allow time for new syntax and tooling demands.

These are instructional considerations, not findings that blocks are universally easier or that a transition to text must always happen. The study above supports a narrower conclusion: under its particular design, students who began with blocks reached roughly equivalent assessment scores after subsequent Java instruction.

How can learners build understanding in either format?

The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s computing pedagogy guidance recommends starting with code reading before code writing: “When teaching programming, focus first on code ‘reading’ activities, before code writing.” It also advises: “With both block-based and text-based programming, encourage learners to review and interpret blocks of code.” The practical point applies across representations: learners should explain what a program will do, trace its steps, and investigate how changes affect the result, rather than treating successful entry of code as proof of understanding. What remains uncertain?

The evidence does not show that block-based programming is universally easier, that all learners should begin with it, or that every learner must eventually move to text. Results can depend on learner age and prior experience, the teaching approach, the tool, the task, and how long learning is assessed. The 2019 meta-analysis explicitly considered several of these contextual factors.

Newer work indicates that comparisons remain an active research question, but the available summaries do not justify detailed conclusions. A 2025 eye-tracking study compared Scratch and Python with 70 novice college students, and a 2026 ACM proceedings search result describes a turtle-graphics comparison involving more than 350 children. Those sample and design descriptions alone do not establish what teachers should do or which approach performs better.
