GraphHopper is an open-source Java routing engine that can run inside an application as a library or as a standalone server. Its project describes it as “fast and memory-efficient,” but that is a design positioning—not a universal benchmark: actual speed and memory use depend on the routing mode, data, configuration and workload. You can operate the engine yourself or use GraphHopper’s separate hosted Directions API; the first avoids hosted API charges but brings infrastructure and maintenance responsibilities, while the second offers managed API access under published credit-based plans.

What GraphHopper does

GraphHopper calculates routes between two or more points. Depending on the deployment and service used, it can return distance, estimated travel time, turn-by-turn instructions and road attributes. The open-source project lists support for OpenStreetMap data and GTFS by default, with the ability to import other data sources. Its listed capabilities also include map matching (snapping GPS traces to roads), isochrones, mobile navigation and public-transit routing. GraphHopper project repository

The hosted Directions API is a separate managed service. Its documented API families include route planning, route optimization, time-and-distance matrices, geocoding, map matching and isochrones. Requests use API-key authentication. The service documentation identifies OpenStreetMap as its default data source and TomTom MultiNet as an alternative. Directions API documentation

What “fast and memory-efficient” means

The GraphHopper project README calls the engine “fast and memory-efficient” and releases it under the Apache License 2.0. The repository’s technical overview explains that this positioning depends in part on the routing mode: preparation work can shift costs earlier, so request-time speed and memory needs vary with how the engine is configured. The project does not provide a current, reproducible benchmark methodology or numerical speed or RAM results that would support a general performance guarantee. GraphHopper project repository

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In practice, compare modes across four dimensions: preparation time and memory, query speed, memory used while serving a request, and how much routing behavior can change per request. The best choice depends on whether predictable, repeated queries or flexible, changing routing conditions matter more.

How GraphHopper’s routing modes compare

Mode Preparation Request-time behavior Flexibility and tradeoff
Speed Uses Contraction Hierarchies (CH); preprocessing takes time and resources. The project describes queries as very fast and lightweight in RAM at request time. Requests are limited to predefined vehicle profiles, so it suits workloads where those profiles can be prepared in advance.
Hybrid Requires more preparation time and memory than flexible mode. The project describes it as slower than speed mode, but much faster than flexible mode; it also describes lower RAM use for one request. Allows more per-request flexibility, including changing properties and integrating traffic data.
Flexible Does not use CH preparation. The project characterizes it as slower than the other modes; it does not publish a current absolute benchmark in the cited overview. Supports flexible routing without the CH preparation step.

These are qualitative comparisons from GraphHopper’s project documentation, not independently measured results. In particular, its description of hybrid mode as an order of magnitude faster than flexible mode should not be treated as a benchmark applicable to every map, profile, server or query mix. Self-hosted engine or hosted Directions API?

The open-source engine is usable as a Java library or standalone server, and the project describes cloud, mobile and offline deployment possibilities. Self-hosting means you control the deployment and data handling, but you also take responsibility for infrastructure, importing and updating data, configuration and maintenance. Those operational costs are separate from any hosted API pricing. GraphHopper project repository GraphHopper open-source page

The Directions API is the alternative for applications that want managed access to routing and related services instead of operating the engine. Its pricing page lists credit-based plans, daily credit allowances and request limits. Those commercial terms can change, so consult the live page for current prices and limits before choosing a plan. GraphHopper pricing

A community question puts the distinction plainly: “If you self host there is no need to pay for the API pricing from your webpage?” In general, operating the open-source engine is distinct from buying access to the hosted API; avoiding API charges does not make self-hosting cost-free, because the operator still provides and maintains the necessary infrastructure.

Which option fits your use case?

  • Choose the self-hosted engine if you need control over deployment or data handling and can operate a Java service or embed the library in your application.
  • Choose the hosted API if you want managed API access to routing and related capabilities and prefer to use GraphHopper’s published credit-based plans and limits.
  • Choose a routing mode based on workload: speed mode favors fast queries with predefined profiles; hybrid mode trades additional preparation for more request-time flexibility; flexible mode avoids CH preparation and is described as the slowest option.

For a self-hosted deployment, the sources cited here do not establish a universal RAM-per-region figure or hardware recommendation. Capacity planning therefore needs to match the map data, routing profiles, selected mode and expected request load rather than rely on a single headline memory number.
