There is no evidence-based overall winner for Python coding between OpenAI’s GPT-5 and xAI’s Grok 4. The official results available here are not a matched Python-specific head-to-head test: OpenAI reports GPT-5 scores on software-engineering and code-editing benchmarks, while xAI describes Grok 4’s tool use and identifies a competitive-coding evaluation without a directly comparable Python score. Which is more useful depends on whether you want to generate a function, debug code, edit a repository, use tools, or get an explanation.
What the published coding results show
OpenAI reports two GPT-5 results that offer evidence about different kinds of coding work. Neither should be read as a general percentage chance that GPT-5 will produce correct Python code for an arbitrary prompt.
- 74.9% on SWE-bench Verified: OpenAI’s 2025 developer announcement reports this result for repository-level issue resolution. Its launch-post run omitted 23 of the benchmark’s 500 tasks because they did not reliably pass on OpenAI’s infrastructure; OpenAI also says the prompt emphasized thorough verification. OpenAI’s GPT-5 developer announcement.
- 88% on Aider Polyglot: OpenAI describes this as a code-editing evaluation using coding exercises from Exercism, where the model writes a solution as a diff. The reported GPT-5 run used high reasoning effort. OpenAI’s GPT-5 developer announcement.
xAI’s Grok 4 announcement says the model has native tool use, including a code interpreter, and identifies LiveCodeBench (January–May) as a competitive-coding benchmark. The announcement does not provide a directly comparable Python score in the material available here. xAI’s Grok 4 announcement.
Why SWE-bench is not a Python snippet test
SWE-bench Verified measures a specific, demanding task: resolve real GitHub issues by editing a codebase, then pass tests that check the fix and guard against regressions. The 500-task verified subset comes from 12 open-source Python repositories. Models receive an issue and repository; the tests are hidden from them. The verified subset was introduced to reduce problems such as ambiguous issue descriptions, overly specific or unrelated tests, and unreliable environment setup. OpenAI’s SWE-bench Verified methodology.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the benchmark relevant to repository-level engineering, but it does not directly measure how often a model writes a correct short Python function, explains a code path well, or diagnoses a particular error. OpenAI’s GPT-5 system card also describes a preparedness evaluation using a fixed subset of 477 verified tasks, averaged over four tries per instance to compute pass@1, with a different maximum trained-in verbosity setting. OpenAI cautions that verbosity changes can affect results; those protocol details should not be conflated with the launch-post figure. GPT-5 system card.
Which model fits the Python task you have?
| Task | What the available evidence says | How to choose in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Write a new Python function | No matched Python-specific score establishes a winner. | Compare both on the same specification and run tests for normal cases, edge cases, and invalid input. |
| Debug failing code | The cited benchmarks do not settle which model is better at debugging a user’s particular failure. | Provide the traceback, relevant code, expected behavior, and a minimal failing example; verify the proposed fix against the failure and regression tests. |
| Edit an existing project | GPT-5 has reported results on repository-level issue resolution and code editing, but these are not direct Grok 4 comparisons. | Try both on the same issue and repository, then inspect the diff and run the project’s tests. |
| Execute code with tools | xAI identifies Grok 4’s native tool use, including a code interpreter. Tool availability and execution are distinct from unaided code-generation ability. | Check whether the specific product or API route you use provides the needed tools, and judge the final code independently of successful execution in a session. |
| Explain code | The cited figures do not rank the models for clarity or accuracy of explanations. | Ask for an explanation tied to specific lines or functions, then confirm claims against the code itself. |
GPT-5 also has different product and API descriptions. OpenAI says ChatGPT uses a system involving reasoning, non-reasoning, and router models, while the API GPT-5 model is the reasoning model. A comparison should therefore name the exact product, model or route, and settings rather than treating every GPT-5 access path as identical. OpenAI’s GPT-5 developer announcement.

How to run a fair side-by-side test
A useful comparison tests the work you actually do, not just one leaderboard score. Keep the conditions consistent and report failures as well as successful answers.
- Identify the exact versions and access routes. Record the ChatGPT or API configuration, Grok product or API route, and any relevant settings.
- Use the same task set. Include a function written from a specification, a debugging task, a change to a small existing project, and a code-explanation task.
- Hold the conditions constant. Use identical prompts and code, equivalent tool access, and the same time or reasoning budget.
- Score correctness independently. Run hidden or independently written tests, inspect edits, and record failures. Disclose sample size and scoring rather than relying on one successful example.
- Separate tool-assisted results from code generation. State whether a model executed code in an interpreter or produced code unaided; the ability to run code is useful but does not itself prove the final code is correct.
Other useful dimensions include test coverage, debugging and edit quality, repository-level performance, explanation clarity, latency and cost under the chosen access plan, and how easily the model can be steered. A single overall winner can hide important differences between these needs.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
OpenAI’s published numbers support the view that GPT-5 has been evaluated on software-engineering and code-editing tasks. xAI’s announcement describes Grok 4’s native tool use and names a competitive-coding benchmark. The results are not equivalent, and they do not answer which model creates better Python code in a controlled, direct comparison. No matched independent Python head-to-head result is established by these sources, so claims that one is definitively better would go beyond the evidence.
