GPSBabel converts GPS data—waypoints, tracks, and routes—between files, GPS receivers, and mapping programs. It can help turn a Garmin receiver’s data into GPX or convert a supported file to another format. It does not convert or transfer map data.
What GPSBabel does—and what it does not
GPSBabel is a utility for moving and transforming GPS data between devices and software. Its supported data objects include waypoints, tracks, and routes; its official overview gives Garmin and Magellan receivers, Google Earth, and Basecamp as examples of endpoints. It also includes data-manipulation functions such as filtering duplicates and simplifying tracks. GPSBabel’s official overview describes its purpose and boundaries.
GPSBabel is not a navigation app or mapping database. As the project’s overview puts it, “GPSBabel does not convert, transfer, send, or manipulate maps.” It handles GPS data associated with maps, not the map imagery or map files themselves.
Which formats and workflows can it handle?
The GPSBabel 1.10.0 manual lists many formats, including GPX, KML, CSV, FIT, NMEA, and Garmin formats. That breadth does not guarantee that every device model or every data field will be supported in a particular conversion. Check the installed-version manual and the specific device or format documentation for the workflow you need. The 1.10.0 manual includes format information and conversion, transfer, merging, and filtering examples.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Workflow | What you provide | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| File conversion | An existing GPS data file, such as GPX or CSV | Whether the input and output formats support the data objects and fields you need |
| Direct receiver transfer | A connected GPS receiver | Whether the device model and firmware, operating system, driver, and connection are supported |
Choose a graphical interface or the command line
The best interface depends on the task and platform. A graphical wrapper can make straightforward file selection easier; the command-line tool is useful for explicit conversion commands and workflows that may not be exposed in a GUI.
- Windows: The GPSBabel installer includes
gpsbabel, the command-line tool, andgpsbabelfront, a graphical wrapper. - macOS: GPSBabel+ provides a graphical wrapper, but its OS notes say some advanced features require Terminal and that the wrapper does not expose every advanced option.
- Linux and POSIX: The project lists Linux and POSIX systems such as FreeBSD among its platform options.
GPSBabel is free to download, use, and modify under the GNU Public License. The project lists Windows 10–11 among its Windows options. See the official operating-system notes for platform and interface details.

Read Garmin USB data into a GPX file
For the Garmin USB protocol documented in GPSBabel 1.10.0, this command reads waypoints from a connected receiver and writes them to a GPX file named blah.gpx:
gpsbabel -i garmin -f usb: -o gpx -F blah.gpx
- Install GPSBabel for your operating system and connect the Garmin receiver using a data connection compatible with that model.
- Open a terminal or command prompt where the
gpsbabelcommand is available. - Run the command above. In this documented workflow,
-i garminselects the Garmin input format,-f usb:reads from USB,-o gpxselects GPX output, and-F blah.gpxnames the output file. - Check that
blah.gpxwas created, then open it in software that supports GPX and confirm the expected waypoints are present.
The Garmin guide says to use usb: as the filename for USB on all operating systems. This command is for the documented Garmin protocol; it is not a universal command for every GPS receiver. See the Garmin format guide for the versioned instructions.

Troubleshoot a Garmin USB transfer
- Windows does not detect the receiver: The 1.10.0 Garmin guide says the Garmin driver is required for this USB workflow. Confirm the driver and device setup for your model.
- Linux transfer fails: The guide notes that the
garmin_gpskernel module can conflict with the transfer. Check whether it is loaded and consult the Linux setup guidance before retrying. - The receiver connects but data is missing: Verify the model and firmware against the relevant format documentation, and confirm that the operation and data fields are supported. A format appearing in the manual does not ensure every model or field is handled identically.
- The cable does not fit or transfer data: Check the receiver’s model and port before buying or substituting a cable; the Garmin USB instructions do not establish one universal connector or cable for all receivers.
Check the manual for your installed version
The examples and Garmin instructions here use GPSBabel 1.10.0 documentation. The project’s documentation index warns: “GPSBabel features may change rapidly. You should be sure to use the version of the documentation that goes with the version you are using.” Match the manual to the installed version, and consult the official download page for current downloads rather than assuming 1.10.0 is the latest release.
