Its README describes installing versions under $HOME/.go and pointing $HOME/.go/current at the selected toolchain. If you would rather avoid a manager, Go also documents a version-specific command method for installing and running multiple versions.
What is goup?
The goup project describes itself as “an elegant Go version manager.” It is intended to let you install Go toolchains and switch between them from the command line. The README says its goals include avoiding a pre-existing Go compiler requirement, offering a one-line installer, installing versions from the Go downloads listing or tip, avoiding “magic” shell behavior, and being written in Go. These are project-stated aims, not independently verified guarantees.
The README reviewed here does not establish goup’s latest release version or date, or a complete current operating-system and architecture support matrix. Check the project’s release assets for those details if compatibility or a particular release matters.
How do I install goup?
The README documents three routes. Choose based on whether you are comfortable running a remote installer, already have Go available, or prefer to install a release executable manually.

Piping a remote script directly to a shell means executing code before inspecting it. Review the script and its source first if you want to understand what it will do. The README says the installer downloads the latest goup release for the platform and adds $HOME/.go/bin and $HOME/.go/current/bin to PATH. It also documents a --skip-prompt option for automation.
Install with Go

go install github.com/owenthereal/goup/cmd/goup@latest
This installation route depends on Go already being installed and usable. The README’s goal of not requiring a pre-existing compiler applies to the project’s intended installation options generally, not to this particular command.

Manual release binary
The README also documents downloading a release executable, putting it somewhere on PATH, making it executable, and adding the current Go binary directory to your shell startup configuration. Consult the project’s release assets for the executable available for your system; the README material reviewed does not provide a complete current platform matrix.
How do I install and switch Go versions with goup?
The README describes goup install as downloading a specified Go version into $HOME/.go/VERSION and linking the selected version at $HOME/.go/current. It lists these additional commands:

After installation and selection, the README’s PATH setup makes the selected toolchain’s bin directory available through $HOME/.go/current/bin. Use the exact command syntax shown by the installed goup version or its help output for the version argument and any shell-specific setup. The README includes a 2020 demonstration, but that example is historical and does not establish which versions are available today.
Can I install multiple Go versions without a version manager?
Yes. The Go project documents a method using version-specific commands from golang.org/dl. For example, its documentation shows installing a command with go install golang.org/dl/go1.10.7@latest, then running go1.10.7 download to obtain that toolchain. You invoke it by its versioned name, such as go1.10.7 version, rather than changing a shared current-version link. The Go documentation says this method requires Git. See Managing Go installations for the Go project’s instructions, including how to locate an installation using that version’s GOROOT and how to uninstall it by removing its directory and versioned binary.
goup and Go’s documented method compared
| Consideration | goup | Go’s version-specific commands |
|---|---|---|
| Installing a version | goup install downloads a specified version under $HOME/.go/VERSION, according to the goup README. |
Install a version-specific golang.org/dl command, then run its download operation, according to Go’s documentation. |
| Choosing a version | goup set selects a version linked at $HOME/.go/current. |
Run the version-specific command, such as go1.10.7. |
| Existing Go compiler | The project states a goal of not requiring one, although its go install installation route does require a working Go toolchain. |
The documented setup uses go install, so it requires a working Go toolchain. |
| Other prerequisite | The documented shell installer or manual release-binary route does not specify Git as a prerequisite. | Go’s documentation says Git is required. |
| Removing an installed version | The README lists goup remove. |
Remove the corresponding installation directory and versioned binary, as described in Go’s documentation. |
These are different workflows, not equivalent implementations with identical features. goup’s selected link may suit someone who wants a single command name to resolve to the chosen version. Go’s documented approach may suit someone who prefers explicit, versioned command names. The right fit depends on how you work and which installation prerequisites you can meet; the cited documentation does not establish a universal winner or comparative performance.
