A GoPro battery’s recording time depends on the camera, settings, and conditions; it is not the same as how long a charged battery retains power in storage. GoPro’s published examples range from 81 to 120 minutes for several models and configurations, but they are not a universal runtime promise. GoPro’s reviewed storage guidance gives no general number of days or months for charge retention.
Recording time is different from stored-charge life
If you mean how long a GoPro records on a full battery, the answer varies by model and configuration. Higher resolutions and frame rates use more power, and conditions such as cold can reduce battery capacity.
If you mean how long a charged battery keeps its power while the camera is stored, GoPro’s reviewed guidance does not establish a general duration. The MAX2 manual instead advises fully charging the camera before storing it.

GoPro’s June 23, 2022 runtime article lists these examples. They come from different models and settings, so they are not a head-to-head comparison or a guarantee for every camera.

GoPro also published HERO10 Enduro results at two stated temperatures. These are manufacturer benchmarks for that model and battery, not expected runtimes for other cameras or everyday use.

What changes how long a GoPro records?
Resolution and frame rate
GoPro says higher resolution and frame rates increase battery use. If runtime matters more than image detail or motion smoothness, lowering one or both can help, though GoPro does not quantify a fixed number of minutes gained for each change.

Screen and wireless use
The MAX2 user manual recommends using the screensaver, lowering screen brightness, and turning off wireless connections when they are not needed. These are model-specific recommendations; the manual does not promise a particular runtime increase.

Temperature and battery age
GoPro warns that cold reduces battery capacity and affects older batteries more. Its MAX2 manual also says extreme heat or cold may temporarily shorten battery life or affect camera operation. Avoid dramatic changes in temperature or humidity.

- Choose a lower resolution or frame rate if the shot allows it.
- Use the screensaver and reduce screen brightness.
- Turn off wireless connections when you do not need them.
- Use QuikCapture to start recording without leaving the camera on longer than necessary.
- Set Auto Power Off to limit idle time.
The exact menus and available options can differ by camera model. These steps are practical power-saving measures, not guarantees of a specific additional recording time.
How long does a GoPro battery hold a charge in storage?
GoPro’s MAX2 manual does not give a general number of days or months that a charged battery will retain power while stored. It advises: “Fully charge your camera before storing it away to help maximize battery life.” This is storage guidance, not a stated charge-retention guarantee.

The manual also warns against storing a battery where metal objects could touch its terminals. Keep storage conditions moderate and avoid sudden temperature or humidity changes.
Charging, spares, and recording while plugged in
Charging-time examples
GoPro’s June 23, 2022 guide gives broad historical examples: about two hours with a GoPro Dual Battery Charger and around four hours when charging through another device, such as a laptop. Actual charging time varies with the power source; these figures are not exact estimates for every current model.
Recording from a power source
According to the MAX2 manual, its battery does not charge while the camera is recording, even when connected to a power source; charging resumes when recording stops. The manual also warns that the camera is not waterproof while its door is open for charging. Use an agency-approved power supply that meets local requirements.
Choosing a way to add recording time
- Spare compatible battery: Useful for rotating batteries or replacing one. Confirm the exact camera model and battery generation.
- Dual charger: Useful for charging multiple compatible batteries. Compatibility depends on the camera and battery family.
- External battery grip: An option for supported setups; verify compatibility with the specific camera.
GoPro’s catalog lists Enduro batteries and dual chargers for named camera families. Its HERO9/HERO10 product page describes a 1720mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery for those models. Check the current catalog and exact compatibility before buying, since listings and availability can change.
