Google VR is no longer an actively supported Google product line, but the two parts of its mobile-VR effort ended differently. Daydream is unsupported and may not work properly on Android 11 or later. Google stopped selling its own Cardboard viewers, but open-sourced the project, leaving compatible apps, libraries and third-party phone viewers available in the broader ecosystem.
What happened to Google Cardboard and Daydream?
Google introduced Cardboard in 2014 as a simple way to turn a smartphone into a basic VR viewer. In a 2019 retrospective, Google said more than 15 million Cardboard units had reached users worldwide. In 2016, it introduced Daydream, a more integrated mobile-VR platform designed for phones with high-resolution displays, powerful processors and high-fidelity sensors for tracking.
The paths diverged in 2019. Google’s Pixel 4 did not support Daydream, and the company retired its Daydream hardware line. On November 6, 2019, Google open-sourced Cardboard. It said overall usage had declined and that it was no longer actively developing the Google VR SDK, while noting continuing entertainment and education uses. Google removed official Cardboard viewer listings from its store in March 2021, according to UploadVR.
Is Google VR dead?
Google’s own mobile-VR products are effectively discontinued, but “dead” is too broad for Cardboard. Daydream software is unsupported and receives no further software or security updates. Cardboard is no longer a Google-sold product or an actively developed Google SDK, yet its open-source project and third-party viewers mean the basic phone-in-a-viewer approach can continue outside Google’s product line.

Google described its Cardboard decision as an open-source handoff, not an immediate shutdown: it wanted the accessible viewer concept to remain available even as it stopped active SDK development. That does not guarantee that every old app, library or phone still works today.
Cardboard vs. Daydream: what was the difference?
| Factor | Cardboard | Daydream |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Simple viewer holds a compatible smartphone; third-party makers can use Google’s Cardboard Manufacturer Kit. | Required a Daydream-ready phone, a dedicated headset and controller, and more capable phone sensors. |
| Setup and cost | Basic viewer concept; current third-party hardware and prices vary by seller. | More integrated, specialized setup; Google no longer sells Daydream View. |
| Tracking and controls | Basic phone-based VR with more limited tracking and interaction. | Designed for more accurate tracking and controller interaction through compatible phones and dedicated hardware. |
| Software status | Google no longer actively develops its VR SDK; open-source code and compatible apps may remain usable. | Unsupported; no software or security updates, and the app may not work properly on Android 11 or later. |
| Availability | Google stopped listing its own viewers; third-party Cardboard-style viewers remain the relevant hardware category. | Daydream View is no longer sold by Google. |
Daydream aimed for a more complete experience, but required a narrower combination of phone capabilities and dedicated equipment. Cardboard was simpler and less demanding, at the cost of limited tracking and dependence on the individual phone and viewer.

Can you still use Google Cardboard?
Possibly. A Cardboard-compatible app and viewer may still work if the phone, app and viewer profile all match. Google’s Cardboard developer project and open-source libraries preserve the platform’s technical foundation, and third-party manufacturers can build viewers using Google’s Cardboard Manufacturer Kit. Those resources do not certify every product or guarantee that a particular app will run on a current phone.
If you are considering a viewer, check the specific listing and app requirements rather than assuming any smartphone fits. Compatibility can depend on the phone’s dimensions and software, the viewer’s lenses and QR-code profile, and whether the app still supports the device. A third-party viewer does not restore Daydream support.

Why did Google stop selling Cardboard?
Google’s stated explanation was that overall Cardboard usage had declined and the company was no longer actively developing the Google VR SDK. It also cited continued entertainment and education use as a reason to keep the concept available through open source. Google did not attribute the decision to a specific financial or adoption cause beyond those statements.
More broadly, the two products illustrate a move away from Google owning a complete mobile-VR stack: Daydream relied on selected phones and dedicated hardware, while Cardboard could continue through an open project and outside manufacturers. That distinction explains why Google could stop selling viewers without making the Cardboard concept disappear.
