The $23 billion figure came from a July 2024 report about Alphabet’s negotiations to buy cloud-security company Wiz; it was not a signed deal. The companies later agreed to a $32 billion all-cash acquisition in March 2025, and Alphabet completed the purchase on March 11, 2026, reporting a $29.5 billion purchase amount after specified adjustments.

What happened to Google’s reported $23 billion Wiz deal?

The Wall Street Journal reported in July 2024 that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, was in advanced discussions to acquire Wiz for about $23 billion. Those talks did not produce an agreement. TechCrunch later reported that negotiations had resumed, and Google announced a definitive agreement on March 18, 2025. Alphabet completed the acquisition on March 11, 2026.

So, Google did not buy Wiz for the $23 billion figure reported in 2024. That amount described an earlier negotiation; the eventual transaction proceeded under a later agreement and closed at a different reported amount.

Why are the reported prices $23 billion, $32 billion and $29.5 billion?

The figures refer to different stages and price bases, rather than three competing final prices.

Figure Stage and basis Source
About $23 billion Approximate value reported for advanced discussions in July 2024; this was not a signed agreement. The Wall Street Journal, September 19, 2024
$32 billion Value of the all-cash definitive agreement announced in March 2025, subject to closing adjustments and customary conditions, including regulatory approvals. Google, March 18, 2025
$29.5 billion Purchase amount Alphabet reported after the acquisition closed, following purchase price adjustments and excluding post-combination compensation arrangements. Alphabet SEC filing, 2026

The $32 billion amount was the announced agreement value, not a promise that the closing accounting would report exactly the same purchase amount. Alphabet’s later filing gives the $29.5 billion figure on its stated accounting basis.

What does Wiz do?

Wiz sells cloud-security software designed to connect with major cloud environments and code environments to help organizations identify and prevent cybersecurity incidents. Google described the deal as a way to accelerate cloud security and multicloud capabilities. Its March 2025 announcement said Wiz products would continue to work across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud, and that Google Cloud customers would continue to have access to partner security solutions through Google Cloud Marketplace. Those are Google’s stated product plans, not an independent assessment of how the integration has performed.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai framed the rationale this way: “Together, Google Cloud and Wiz will turbocharge improved cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds.”

Will Wiz still support AWS and Azure?

Google said Wiz would continue supporting AWS, Azure and Oracle Cloud after the acquisition, rather than limiting the platform to Google Cloud. That statement describes the announced direction; it does not by itself establish how every product, integration or service will operate over time.

What Wiz’s earlier growth figures do—and do not—show

A September 2024 Wall Street Journal report said Wiz reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue 18 months after its 2020 launch and had $500 million in annual recurring revenue at the time of that report. These are historical figures reported in 2024, not current revenue disclosures.
