Yes—Google may delete a personal Google Account and its data after at least two years without activity. The policy began rolling out in 2023; December 1, 2023 was the earliest possible deletion date under the policy, not a new deadline in December 2026. If you want to keep an old account, sign in and use a Google service at least once every two years, and keep its recovery email up to date.
Is Google really deleting inactive Gmail accounts?
Google’s policy applies to personal Google Accounts, not just Gmail. If an account has been inactive for at least two years, Google may delete the account and its data. That can affect the account’s Gmail and other Google services, such as Drive and Photos.
Deletion is possible, not guaranteed on a specific date for every account that meets the inactivity definition. Google says December 1, 2023 was the earliest an account could be deleted under the policy. That date marked the policy’s original rollout; it is not an upcoming December 2026 deadline. What counts as activity on a Google Account?
Google defines an inactive account as one that has not been used within a two-year period. Activity is associated with the account, rather than a particular device. Examples include:

- Reading or sending email in Gmail.
- Using Google Drive.
- Watching a YouTube video while signed in.
- Downloading an app.
- Using Google Search while signed in.
- Using Sign in with Google for a third-party app or service.
Watching a YouTube video while signed in counts as account activity. Simply having old videos on YouTube does not mean those videos will automatically be deleted because you have not opened YouTube; the policy is about inactivity across the account, alongside separate product-specific rules.
Which accounts are covered—and which are not?
The two-year inactivity policy described here covers personal Google Accounts. Accounts created through an employer, school, or another organization are excluded from this policy. Those organizations may have their own account and data-retention rules.

Google also says it may delete data within an individual product after two years of inactivity under that product’s rules. That is distinct from deleting an entire Google Account under the personal-account inactivity policy. Google Account Help: Inactive Google Account policy

Google says it sends multiple notices in the months before deletion, to the account’s email address and to its recovery email if one is set. A notice sent only to an old inbox may be easy to miss, so make sure you can access the account and its recovery address. Google’s policy announcement

How to keep an old account from becoming inactive
- Check each account. On devices where you use Google, confirm which accounts are signed in; activity on one account should not be treated as activity on another.
- Sign in and use a Google service. Read or send Gmail, use Drive or Search, or watch a YouTube video while signed in to the account you want to keep.
- Repeat within two years. Make account activity a recurring task rather than relying on a one-time sign-in.
- Update the recovery email. Use an address you can access so Google’s warnings have a better chance of reaching you.
- Export important data separately. Keep copies of files and other information you cannot afford to lose; account activity and a backup protect against different risks.
Will Google delete your Photos, Drive files, and other data?
If Google deletes a personal account under the inactivity policy, its data may be deleted too. Export important files from services such as Gmail, Photos, Drive, and YouTube rather than treating an account that remains active as your only backup.
Keeping an account active is a simple way to reduce the risk of inactivity-based deletion, but it does not give you a separate copy of your data. An export provides a separate copy, though it may take more effort to maintain and does not keep the account itself active.

Who may be exempt from the inactivity policy?
Google lists several circumstances in which an account may be treated as an exception. These include:
- An account with a current or ongoing purchase or subscription.
- An account with a gift card that has a monetary balance.
- An account that has published an app or game with active subscriptions or financial transactions.
- An active supervised account for a minor.
- An account with purchases of digital items, such as books or movies.
Do not rely on an exception as your only protection if you need to preserve an account or its data. Sign in periodically and keep a separate copy of important information.
