Google stopped investing in games from its internal Stadia Games & Entertainment (SG&E) group in February 2021, then shut down its Stadia streaming service in January 2023. The 2022 claim that Google had game-making talent “going to waste” was Chrome Unboxed writer Michael Perrigo’s opinion—not a measured finding about the developers’ abilities or what happened to their careers.
What did Google’s internal game developers make?
In his October 12, 2022 opinion piece for Chrome Unboxed, Michael Perrigo pointed to two projects as examples of Google’s game-making work: Outcasters and The Descent of the Serpent. Perrigo called Outcasters well executed but argued it was not receiving enough support. Those are his assessments; the available sources do not independently establish the games’ quality or commercial prospects.
The Descent of the Serpent
On September 22, 2022, Google Arts & Culture announced The Descent of the Serpent, describing it as the platform’s first video game. It was made with Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology. Perrigo described it as a web-based maze adventure involving the recovery of objects and educational material about Mesoamerica.

The project shows that Google produced a Google Arts & Culture game in partnership with a museum. It does not establish that Google had restarted a sustained internal game-studio strategy after ending SG&E’s exclusive-game investment.

Why did Google stop making Stadia exclusives?
Google announced the SG&E decision in February 2021. It said it would stop investing in exclusive content from its internal team beyond the near-term planned games, and that most of the team would move to other roles. Jade Raymond was also leaving the company.
Google’s stated rationale was that creating first-party games takes years and significant investment. It said it would instead focus resources on Stadia’s technology platform and partnerships with game publishers and developers. That explains the company’s position at the time; it does not settle whether that strategy was wise or whether Perrigo’s criticism was justified. Read Google’s February 2021 announcement.

Why did Google shut down Stadia?
Ending investment in internal exclusives and closing the consumer service were separate decisions made about 19 months apart. In September 2022, Google announced that Stadia would wind down because the service had not gained the user traction the company expected. Stadia remained available until January 18, 2023, when it shut down.

Phil Harrison, then Stadia’s vice president and general manager, described the decision in Google’s September 29, 2022 announcement: “And while Stadia’s approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service.” This was Google’s explanation for winding down the service, not a statement about SG&E’s games or its employees.

Google’s Stadia shutdown information confirms the service is no longer available. The closure means the article’s prediction about a future Stadia shutdown is now historical; Stadia is not an operating service.

That phrase captures Perrigo’s argument, not an independently verifiable outcome. The record supports a narrower conclusion: Google chose to end further internal investment in Stadia exclusives, said most SG&E employees would move to other roles, and later closed Stadia after user traction fell short of expectations. The sources do not establish what those employees did afterward, measure the games’ quality or reach, or show whether Google’s later projects used the same teams.

Google’s Arts & Culture game is a notable counterpoint to any claim that Google never made games. But one museum partnership is not evidence of a continuing first-party studio, and it does not reverse the SG&E decision.
