Google Japan’s Gboard team has unveiled a physical, DIY keyboard concept that puts keys on moving conveyor belts. Instead of reaching across a fixed keyboard, you wait for the character you want to pass beneath your fingertip and press it. Google describes one-handed typing as a central use case, but this is not a new feature in the standard Gboard phone app or a finished keyboard for sale.
How Google’s conveyor-belt keyboard works
The concept reverses the usual keyboard arrangement: rather than moving your hand to a stationary key, the belt carries keys toward your finger. You time a press as the desired character passes by. In its October 1, 2026 announcement, Google describes the device as a keyboard with keys arranged on a conveyor belt: “ベルトコンベアー上にキーを配置したキーボードです。”
Google says each belt has 29 keys and that the layout lets users enter uppercase and lowercase letters directly. The announcement frames one-handed use as a goal, including typing while the other hand uses a mouse or holds a cup of tea. Those are the team’s design claims, not results from independent performance or ergonomic testing.

No. Google’s post introduces Gboard as its keyboard app for smartphones and tablets, then separately presents this concept as a physical keyboard that people can build. The conveyor-belt design is not described as an update to the standard mobile app.

Can you buy Google’s conveyor-belt keyboard?
The announcement calls it a DIY keyboard that can be built, but does not give a retail price or announce a commercial product. Android Authority’s contemporaneous report says the keyboard cannot be bought and reports that Google published open-source blueprints: Android Authority’s report. The announcement text does not specify a parts list or license, so those details should not be assumed from the word “DIY.”
Google has shared other DIY keyboard concepts before. In 2024, it explicitly said its double-sided keyboard had no sales plan and offered open-source plans alongside a paper-craft version. That statement concerned the 2024 project; it does not establish the license or availability of files for this 2026 design. Google’s 2024 concept post.

What is announced, and what is only an idea?
The moving keys, the 29-key-per-belt specification and the one-handed-use concept are part of Google’s description of the design. The team also mentions possible color variations, a high-speed mode, and longer or shorter versions, but presents these as ideas under consideration—not released features or guaranteed plans.

The unusual mechanism is clear; its practical advantages are not established. Google’s announcement does not provide typing-speed measurements or evidence that the design is more comfortable or efficient than a conventional keyboard. Its appeal for now is the mechanical experiment: instead of reaching for a key, you let the key come to you.
