Google’s latest climate report says the company is finding its 2030 goals harder to reach as AI infrastructure grows faster than grid decarbonization. Separately, a real Google Search AI Overview once suggested glue as a way to make cheese stick to pizza. The two stories raise questions about Google’s environmental progress and AI reliability, but the available evidence does not show that one caused the other.
Is Google on track for its 2030 climate targets?
Google has not withdrawn its goals, but its latest reporting describes a widening challenge rather than a clear path to meeting them. In its Environmental Report published June 30, 2026, which covers 2025, Google said AI infrastructure is expanding faster than grids are decarbonizing and that reaching its climate ambitions is getting harder. That is the company’s assessment of progress, not proof that the targets have been formally abandoned.
Alphabet’s 2024 Form 10-K set out two distinct ambitions for 2030: net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions across operations and the value chain, and 24/7 carbon-free energy on every grid where it operates. For net zero, the company aims to reduce combined absolute Scope 1, Scope 2 market-based and Scope 3 emissions by 50% against a 2019 base year. The filing also cautions that total emissions may rise before declining toward that reduction target.

What the latest reported figures show
| Reporting period | Measure | Company-reported result | What it does—and does not—say |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025, reported in Google’s 2026 Environmental Report | Operational emissions | Down 2% | A reduction in operational emissions for that year; it is not a reported reduction in total value-chain emissions. |
| 2025, reported in Google’s 2026 Environmental Report | Supply-chain emissions | Up 25% year over year | An increase in one important part of the value chain, even as operational emissions fell. |
| 2025, reported in Google’s 2026 Environmental Report | Net-new clean-energy agreements | Over 12 GW signed | Agreements are a procurement commitment; this figure is not itself a measure of carbon-free electricity used every hour. |
| 2024, reported in Google’s 2025 Environmental Report | Total emissions | Up 11% year over year | Google attributed the increase largely to supply-chain emissions. This is a total-emissions figure for 2024, not the same measure as the 2025 operational-emissions result. |
| 2024, reported in Google’s 2025 Environmental Report | Data-center electricity demand | Up 27% | Reflects higher electricity demand, not a percentage increase in emissions. |
| 2024, reported in Google’s 2025 Environmental Report | Hourly carbon-free energy use | Rose from 64% to 66% | Shows progress on hourly carbon-free energy matching, but does not establish that the 24/7 goal has been met across every grid. |
The figures should be read by year and emissions boundary. Google’s 2% operational-emissions decline in 2025 does not cancel out the reported 25% rise in supply-chain emissions, and neither number is a 2025 total-emissions result. The 11% increase in total emissions belongs to 2024; it should not be carried forward as though it described 2025.

Why clean-energy contracts are not the same as 24/7 carbon-free power
Google’s stated 24/7 goal is to match its electricity use with carbon-free energy on an hourly basis in every grid where it operates. Signing agreements for more than 12 GW of net-new clean energy in 2025 is relevant to that effort, but a contract figure alone does not show how much carbon-free electricity was available to meet demand in each hour or location. Google’s reported 66% hourly carbon-free energy use in 2024 is a separate progress measure, not evidence that the 2030 goal is already achieved.
Did Google AI really recommend putting glue on pizza?
Yes. In a May 30, 2024 post, Google Search vice president Elizabeth Reid acknowledged that some AI Overviews had been “odd, inaccurate or unhelpful.” She described forum content producing advice “like using glue to get cheese to stick to pizza.” The Associated Press reported that the widely shared glue example came from a satirical Reddit comment.

The incident is a useful example of how an AI-generated answer can go wrong when it fails to recognize a source’s tone and context. A joke or deliberately absurd forum post may be retrievable text, but that does not make it reliable practical advice. Google also said some screenshots circulating at the time were fabricated, while acknowledging that real AI Overview errors had occurred; the existence of fabricated examples does not make the glue answer itself fictitious.

What did Google change after the AI Overview errors?
Google said it made more than a dozen technical improvements after the May 2024 errors. Its stated measures included better detection of nonsensical queries, limiting satire and humor content, limiting user-generated content that could offer misleading advice, and restricting AI Overviews for queries where the feature was not proving helpful.
Those are Google’s descriptions of changes made in response to the incident. They do not establish that AI Overviews became error-free or guarantee that the same kinds of mistakes cannot recur. The Associated Press also reported concerns from a Purdue mycology professor about omissions in a separate AI-generated answer about mushrooms, illustrating that a fluent summary can be incomplete as well as plainly absurd.
What do Google’s product climate claims mean?
Google has also estimated that five of its products enabled 26 million metric tons of emissions reductions in 2024. That is an estimate of reductions enabled through products, not a reduction in Google’s own corporate footprint. It should not be netted against the company’s reported emissions increases or treated as evidence that its corporate 2030 targets have been met.

Are the climate targets and the pizza answer connected?
The evidence supports two separate conclusions: Google’s latest report says its 2030 climate ambitions are becoming harder to reach as infrastructure and supply-chain pressures grow, and Google Search’s AI Overview produced a real, widely shared glue-on-pizza error in 2024. No cited source establishes that climate performance caused the AI answer, or that the answer reflects a climate-related failure. The juxtaposition is a headline framing, not a demonstrated causal link.
