To text with Google Voice, you need a Google Voice number. In the app on Android or iPhone/iPad, open Messages, tap Compose, choose or enter a recipient, type your message, and tap Send. On a computer, go to voice.google.com, open Messages, click Send a message, enter the recipient, write your text, and click Send.
Send a text from a phone or computer
Android or iPhone/iPad
- Open the Google Voice app and tap Messages.
- Tap Compose, then select a contact or enter a phone number.
- Type your message and tap Send.
To reply, open the conversation, enter your response, and send it. Google Voice does not support texting unless your account has a Google Voice number. Google’s instructions are available for Android and iPhone and iPad.
Computer
- Go to voice.google.com and open Messages.
- Click Send a message, then enter a contact name or phone number.
- Type your text and click Send.
To reply on the website, open the conversation, enter your response, and send it. See Google Voice Help for computer for the web instructions.
Read incoming texts and check for missing messages
Open Messages in the Voice app or on the website to see incoming texts and conversations. If a message you expect is not there, check the Spam folder. Google says international receiving is possible, but some banks and subscription services do not deliver texts to Voice numbers. If you use an iPhone and a sender’s iMessage text does not arrive, Google says the sender may need to deregister their number from iMessage.

Know where Google Voice texting works
Google Voice sends texts over Wi-Fi or mobile data, not through your mobile plan’s text-message allowance. Google describes personal texts to U.S., Canadian, and Puerto Rican numbers as having no charge, with an exception for the U.S. territories American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its cost guidance specifically mentions U.S. and Canadian numbers, so do not assume the same cost terms apply to every destination. Standard data limits and rates can still apply; outside the U.S., using mobile data may also lead to roaming charges. Paid Voice subscriptions support text messaging only in the U.S. See Google’s Android, iOS, and computer help pages for destination and usage details.
- Short codes: You cannot send texts to five- or six-digit short-code numbers. Some organizations also do not send verification codes to Google Voice numbers. If a bank or website cannot verify you through Voice, use a mobile carrier number if available.
- Long messages: A text longer than 160 characters sent to a non-Voice number is split into multiple messages.
- Group messages: You can add up to seven other participants, for eight total including you.
- Images and GIFs: Images larger than 2 MB are reduced in size. GIFs larger than 2 MB will not send.
Keep texts personal and interactive
Google says, “Use Google Voice for interactive messaging only.” Consumer Voice messaging is intended for personal conversations, not bulk announcements. Repeated identical texts—especially when recipients do not reply—links, high message volume, or spam reports can lead to message blocking. For teachers sending bulk announcements, Google suggests email, a school website, social media, or another communication app; its Google Voice Community Guide describes consumer calling and messaging as one-to-one and personal.

Troubleshoot messages that will not send
- Check the recipient: Confirm the number is entered correctly and is not a five- or six-digit short code.
- Check connectivity: Voice needs Wi-Fi or mobile data to send. Confirm that your device can access the internet.
- Consider number transfers: If you recently ported your number to Google Voice, texting may not work until three business days after the transfer completes.
- If sending is blocked: Google does not state a fixed daily message quota in its help instructions. Sending many messages in a short time or having recipients mark them as spam can temporarily restrict calling or messaging. Google advises waiting 24 hours after a block; repeated behavior or serious cases can result in suspension.
