This was a limited-time Google Play Movies promotion reported on December 24, 2016—not a current deal. It offered one movie rental for $0.99 or one movie purchase at 50% off per Google Play account, and the reported offer ended January 23, 2017.
What the Google Play Movies holiday deal offered
Chrome Unboxed reported that customers could choose one of two promotions: rent one movie for $0.99 or buy one movie at half price. The article said the limit was one rental and one purchase per Google Play account, so the two options were separate account allowances rather than a choice that excluded the other.

The report said both SD and HD versions were eligible and that the discount appeared at checkout. It named Suicide Squad and Jason Bourne as examples of new releases included in the promotion; those examples do not establish that every movie in the store qualified. Rental versus purchase
| Option | Reported promotion | Account limit |
|---|---|---|
| Rental | One movie rental for $0.99 | One per Google Play account |
| Purchase | One movie purchase at 50% off | One per Google Play account |
The rental had a stated price of $0.99; the purchase discount was a percentage, so its final price depended on the movie’s listed price. The source does not provide a general price comparison or establish that the two options had identical terms beyond reported SD and HD eligibility.

When the promotion ended
