The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a good buy only if you will use its 8-inch inner display often enough to justify the costs: a premium launch price, a heavier and more delicate body than a conventional phone, no dust-resistance rating, and battery and charging compromises that reviewers repeatedly flagged. If you mainly want a large screen for reading, video, and multitasking, and you can accept foldable care, it is one of the more usable book-style foldables Google has made. If you only want a phone that fits in a pocket, a standard slab phone is the better choice.
This review covers the phone as originally announced and reviewed in 2024. Prices, software support and availability can change, so check current sources before buying.
What the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is
Google announced the Pixel 9 Pro Fold in August 2024 as a book-style foldable. It opens from a 6.3-inch outer display into an 8-inch inner display, which places it in the same category as Samsung’s and OnePlus’s large-screen foldables. The key specifications, as listed by Google and in the launch announcement, are below.
| Feature | Pixel 9 Pro Fold specification | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Announced | August 2024 | Google announcement, 2024 |
| Outer display | 6.3 inches | Google hardware specifications |
| Inner display | 8 inches | Google hardware specifications |
| Processor | Tensor G4 | Google hardware specifications |
| Memory | 16GB RAM | Google hardware specifications |
| Rear cameras | 48MP main, 10.5MP ultrawide, 10.8MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom | Tom’s Guide review, 2024 |
| Water resistance | IPX8 rating (water only) | Google announcement, 2024 |
| Dust resistance | No dust-resistance rating; IPX8 does not cover dust | The Guardian review, 12 September 2024 |
Pros
The advantages fall into two groups: what Google specifies, and what reviewers judged to be good in use.
#1 Best Overall
- The power behind AI on Google Pixel - Google Tensor G4 is Pixel’s fastest, most powerful chip yet. It powers Google’s AI for innovative camera features, seamless multitasking, and more help throughout the day.
- Gemini. Your built-in AI assistant - Gemini helps you supercharge your ideas. Hold the power button to start writing, planning, learning, and more.
- A camera that unfolds a world of creativity - With a flexible design, powerful triple rear camera system, and advanced AI, it’s easy to snap brilliant selfies, take incredible group pics, and add custom edits.
- Opens smoothly, stands solidly - Use Pixel 9 Pro Fold lying flat or in multiple standing positions. And count on its sturdy hinge to hold up fold after fold.
- Meet your new dream screens - Immerse yourself in entertainment and ease through daily tasks with the 80% brighter 8" Super Actua Flex inner display and 6.3" Actua outer display. The largest display on a phone.
- Large inner screen (manufacturer specification): 8 inches, which gives tablet-style space for split-screen multitasking.
- Usable outer screen (reviewer judgment): reviewers considered the 6.3-inch cover display practical as a normal phone display, so you do not have to open the phone for everyday tasks.
- Thin, revised design (reviewer judgment): reviewers praised the form factor for a foldable.
- 5x optical zoom (manufacturer specification): the telephoto lens is the main hardware reason to choose this phone over a cheaper foldable.
- Water resistance (manufacturer specification): IPX8 covers submersion in water under the conditions Google specifies.
- Google software and AI features (manufacturer feature): Pixel-exclusive features on the inner screen, including multitasking, are the main software reason to prefer this phone.
Cons
- High launch price: the 2024 launch price was $1,799 in the US, a premium even among foldables. See the price section below before relying on it.
- Weight and fragility: reviewers described the phone as heavier and more delicate than a standard slab phone, and The Guardian specifically flagged the inner screen as delicate.
- No dust-resistance rating: the IPX8 rating is about water, not dust, so keep it away from sand, grit and dusty environments.
- Battery endurance and charging: reviewers repeatedly noted compromises here (detailed below).
- Graphics performance: reviewers found Tensor G4 performance good but not category-leading, and behind some competing foldables in graphics.
- Repair cost: reviewers described high repair costs for a device of this type, which is why insurance is worth considering.
Camera: useful for a foldable, not a class leader
The three rear cameras (48MP main, 10.5MP ultrawide and 10.8MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom) are the strongest reason to consider this phone over a cheaper foldable. Tom’s Guide found the camera useful for a foldable but said it offered limited improvement over the first Pixel Fold in some situations. The telephoto lens is the feature to test in your own shooting conditions, because a 5x optical lens is the main differentiator from many competing foldables.
Battery and charging
Battery life and charging were the most consistent compromises across reviews. In Tom’s Guide’s 2024 battery test, the phone lasted 11 hours 36 minutes. Its wired charging reached 38% after 30 minutes on a 21W charger. These figures come from that publication’s own benchmark and conditions, so they indicate what to expect under similar use rather than a guarantee for your usage.
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold with Gemini has the largest display on a phone and brings you the best of Google AI first, so you can do more, effortlessly[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Unlock Gemini Advanced for a year at no cost to you; get access to even more powerful AI features with the Google One AI Premium plan, a total value of $239 at no cost to you[8,9]
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the thinnest foldable available[3]; it features a silky matte glass back, a redesigned camera bar, and a scratch-resistant display
- Take brilliant selfies and incredible group pics with Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s advanced triple rear camera, flexible design, and innovative AI; use tabletop mode for tripod-free astrophotography and group pics
A foldable’s bigger display and dual-panel design make battery life harder to optimise. If you regularly use the inner screen for long video sessions or heavy multitasking, plan on charging during the day rather than relying on a single overnight charge.

Foldable durability is a real ownership consideration, not a footnote. The Guardian reviewer, Victoria Woollaston, wrote: “Buying accidental damage insurance may be prudent.” That is advice about a delicate and expensive device, not a Google warranty term or an insurance guarantee. Check any protection plan’s terms for coverage of inner-screen damage before you buy.

Price at launch
The launch prices reported in 2024 were $1,799 in the US, £1,749 in the UK and AU$2,699 in Australia, according to TechRadar’s review. These are historical launch prices, not verified current prices. Check Google’s current store or a retailer before deciding, and compare the price with other foldables available in your region at the time you buy.
How it compares with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and OnePlus Open
Launch-era reviews compared the Pixel 9 Pro Fold with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the OnePlus Open. TechRadar’s review table listed the following inner screen sizes. These are 2024 figures, not current market data.

| Phone | Inner screen (2024 review data) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold | 8 inches | Pixel software and 5x optical zoom |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 | 7.6 inches | Launch-era comparison; current price not stated |
| OnePlus Open | 7.8 inches | Launch-era comparison; current price not stated |
When comparing these models today, check the same criteria in each review: inner-screen size and shape, outer-screen usability, weight and thickness, camera results, battery endurance and charging, processor performance, multitasking software, dust and water protection, repair and insurance options, and current local price.
Verdict: who should buy it
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is worth buying if the inner screen is the main reason you want a foldable. Buy it if you:
- regularly read, watch, or multitask on a tablet-sized display;
- want a usable cover screen for everyday phone tasks;
- value the 5x optical zoom and Pixel software;
- accept the care, weight and repair risks that come with a foldable.
Skip it if you mainly want a pocket-friendly phone, need dust protection, or want the longest battery life and fastest charging. In those cases, a standard flagship phone, or a foldable chosen after you check current prices, will serve you better.
