The $560,000 total in the headline is not confirmed by the official Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) materials available as of October 9, 2026. What the official sources do establish is narrower: ZDI’s Pwn2Own Ireland 2026 rules list a $300,000 prize for a remote Google Pixel 10 entry and $75,000 for a Pixel 10 USB entry, and several Pixel 10 attempts were scheduled. Separately, Google Project Zero published a Pixel 10 exploit chain in May 2026. The two are different events, and the contest prize listings are not the same thing as payouts.
What the $560,000 figure does and does not show
The headline figure is attributed to the headline itself. Neither the Pwn2Own Ireland 2026 rules nor the published schedule gives a final Pixel 10 payout breakdown, and the official material reviewed does not add up to $560,000 in confirmed Pixel 10 winnings. Until ZDI publishes final results for the Pixel 10 entries, or another reliable outlet reports the organizer’s figures, treat the total as unverified.
Two points are easy to blur together. A listed prize is the amount ZDI has published for a category of entry. A payout is what was actually awarded for a successful, verified attempt. Only the first is established by the official rules.

Project Zero’s Pixel 10 exploit chain
Google Project Zero published a technical report dated May 13, 2026, titled “A 0-click exploit chain for the Pixel 10: When a Door Closes, a Window Opens.” The write-up, by Project Zero’s Seth Jenkins, describes a chain that starts with zero-click interaction and reaches root. This report is a research disclosure. It is not a record of what happened at the October 2026 contest.

The Dolby decoder entry point
According to the report, the first stage adapts a Dolby decoder exploit that had previously been used in a Pixel 9 chain. The report says this Dolby component only works on unpatched devices with a December 2025 security patch level or earlier. A current, fully patched Pixel 10 is therefore not described as vulnerable to this exact chain.
The VPU driver privilege escalation
The Pixel 9 chain used a BigWave driver for privilege escalation. The report says the Pixel 10 does not include that driver. Instead, the researchers audited the VPU driver exposed through /dev/vpu, which supports the Chips&Media Wave677DV video-decoding hardware on Google’s Tensor G5. According to the report, a flaw in how that driver handles memory mapping allowed arbitrary kernel read and write in the researchers’ analysis.

The VPU issue was reported to Google on November 24, 2025, and Android’s Vulnerability Rewards Program rated it High severity. The passage reviewed does not give a CVE identifier for the issue, so none is cited here.

Pixel 10 prizes in the Pwn2Own Ireland 2026 rules
ZDI’s official Pwn2Own Ireland 2026 rules set the following category prizes for Google Pixel 10 entries.
| Entry type | Listed prize | What the listing means |
|---|---|---|
| Remote Pixel 10 entry | $300,000 | Category prize in the official rules; not a confirmed payout |
| USB Pixel 10 entry | $75,000 | Category prize in the official rules; not a confirmed payout |
The rules treat remote and USB as separate attack vectors. A USB attack has to target the user-accessible port, and the phone starts the attempt locked. Eligibility conditions and attack requirements are set out in the rules themselves, so readers comparing entries should read them rather than rely on the prize figures alone.

Which Pixel 10 attempts were scheduled
The official schedule lists several Pixel 10 attempts. Scheduling is not the same as success, so none of these entries should be read as a confirmed exploit.

Project Zero research versus the contest
The Project Zero chain and the Pwn2Own entries differ in almost every respect that matters for a reader. The sources do not establish that the Project Zero chain was the chain used in any contest attempt.
| Factor | Project Zero report | Pwn2Own Ireland 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Published May 13, 2026 | Event held October 2026 |
| Nature | Researcher disclosure of an exploit chain | Competition with category prizes |
| Pixel 10 prize amount | Not applicable | $300,000 remote; $75,000 USB (listed) |
| Patch-state limit | Dolby component works only on devices at December 2025 patch level or earlier | Not stated in the reviewed rules excerpt |
| Confirmed results | Not applicable | Not confirmed in the reviewed official material |
What this means for Pixel 10 owners
The Project Zero limitation is the practical point for users. Devices on the December 2025 security patch level or earlier are the ones the report says the Dolby component affects. To check your phone, open Settings, go to About phone, and look for the security update level; menu labels can vary with the Android version, so search the Settings app for “security update” if the path differs. Installing the latest Google security update is the relevant step, and the report’s limitation is the reason the patch date matters.
The headline’s $560,000 figure should not be used to judge how well the Pixel 10 resists attack. Listed prizes and scheduled attempts measure what organizers offered and planned, not how secure the device is.
