Choose Google Photos if you need one photo library across Android and iPhone; choose iCloud Photos if your library is centered on Apple’s Photos app and devices. Before deciding, check how much storage you actually have after Gmail and Drive use, compare prices in your country, and understand that syncing changes—including deletions—is not the same as keeping an independent backup.
Which service fits your devices?
Google Photos is available on Android and iOS, making it the more flexible fit for a mixed-device household or someone who may switch between mobile platforms. Google lists the app for both platforms and notes that its latest version and age eligibility requirements apply. Google Photos product page
iCloud Photos is the natural fit when you manage your library mainly in Apple’s Photos app across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple also lists browser access at iCloud.com and iCloud for Windows, so an Apple-centered library is not limited to viewing on an iPhone or Mac. Apple iCloud page
- Android or mixed Android/iPhone household: Lean toward Google Photos, then verify backup is enabled and your Google Account has enough quota after Gmail and Drive use.
- iPhone, iPad, and Mac household: Lean toward iCloud Photos if you want Apple Photos to keep the library and edits aligned across devices.
- Considering a platform change: Google Photos works on both mobile platforms, but moving a library is a one-time copy process with exclusions, not an ongoing bridge between services.
How storage and prices compare
Google’s 15 GB is shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive, not reserved for photos. Google says uploads in Original quality use account storage. Legacy High quality or Express quality uploads made before June 1, 2021 do not count, but that exception does not make current uploads unlimited. Google Photos storage help · Google One storage help

Estimate usable storage, not just the headline quota
Neither service’s headline number tells you how long your library will fit. The outcome depends on the size and format mix of your photos and videos, how much storage other account data consumes, and what you add later. Check current usage in Google Account storage or your Apple device’s iCloud settings, then compare the remaining space with your library and expected growth.

- iCloud Photos uses both iCloud storage and storage on your devices. Apple’s Optimize Storage option can keep smaller device versions while originals remain in iCloud; it does not stop originals from consuming iCloud quota.
How photo quality, organization, and device space work
Google Photos
Google Photos supports search, editing, organization, sharing, and automatic upload. On Android, you can choose which device folders are backed up. Google’s help documentation lists support for formats including HEIC/HEIF and most RAW photos, as well as Live Photos when using Google Photos on an iPhone or iPad. Google advertises AI-powered search and editing features, but it qualifies some natural-language search features by age, country, language, account settings, and other conditions. Do not assume every feature is available on every device or account. The Google Photos page also describes sharing with contacts who do not use the service. Google Photos product page
iCloud Photos
Apple says iCloud Photos stores media in its original formats at full resolution and keeps the library current across devices using the same Apple Account. Syncing, deletion, and backup are not the same thing
iCloud Photos synchronizes library changes across devices. Apple explains, “Changes you make on one device change on your other devices too.” If you delete a photo while using iCloud Photos, it is deleted across devices using the service; accidental deletions can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days. That synchronization behavior matters for backup planning: a deletion can propagate rather than leave a second untouched copy behind. Apple says iCloud Photos media is not duplicated in iCloud Backup and advises users to keep backup copies. If protection from accidental deletion or account problems is important, maintain a separate copy—such as a local copy on a drive or another independent destination—and check that it is complete before deleting anything. Google documents backup status so you can check whether items have uploaded, and says backed-up items can be accessed from other devices signed into the same Google Account. Confirm that backup has finished before treating an item as safely stored in the cloud. Google Photos backup help

Google supports a request to copy iCloud Photos content through Apple’s Data and Privacy process. The Apple Account must use two-factor authentication, and the Google Account needs enough storage. Google estimates the transfer takes 3–7 days. It copies content rather than removing it from iCloud, but additions made to iCloud afterward do not automatically appear in Google Photos. Know what the transfer does not carry over
- Shared Albums, Smart Albums, Photo Stream content, the video portion of Live Photos, and media not stored in iCloud Photos are excluded.
- Only the latest edits transfer.
- Photos remain in albums where possible. Videos transfer separately and are not placed in albums.
- Duplicate items already in Google Photos are kept as a single copy.
Use the transfer as a migration route with these limits in mind, not as continuous synchronization between two libraries. Review the destination library after the copy completes before changing or deleting source items. Google transfer instructions
Which should you choose?
