Google Photos was reported to be rolling out face shortcuts in Search on Android and iOS in December 2025. The shortcuts let you select a recognized person or pet to open associated photos, but the report does not establish that the interface is available to every account today. Face Groups must be enabled for face labels to appear.
What the Google Photos Search change does
The reported change places shortcuts to recognized faces in Google Photos Search. Select a person or pet to open photos associated with them; tap More to see other people and pets. Android Authority described the rollout on Android and iOS on 22 December 2025, but Google’s Help documentation does not give a complete rollout or eligibility list, so availability may differ by account.
This is a way to reach face-related photos more directly, not a requirement to create or use albums. You do not need to buy a photo frame or other hardware to use the Search shortcut.
How to find photos of a person or pet

Open Google Photos and go to Search. Google also describes Ask as a route to find face labels.

Select a surfaced face to view associated photos. Tap More to browse other recognized people and pets.

To search by a person’s or pet’s name or nickname, first assign that label to the face. Text search by name or nickname depends on having a label.

Google says classic Search suits straightforward searches, while Ask Photos is intended for more complex, conversational requests. Ask Photos requires opting in to Gemini features in Photos and is experimental; Google cautions that it may return unexpected or inaccurate results. That warning applies to Ask Photos, not specifically to the face shortcuts.
Why People and pets may not appear
Check Face Groups
Google’s Help documentation says face labels are available only when Face Groups is on. If face shortcuts or labels are missing, check that setting first. If you want to search by name, also make sure the relevant person or pet has a label.
Consider account and rollout differences
Google notes that features can vary by region, domain, or account type. The December 2025 report described a broad Android and iOS rollout, but it does not prove that every user—or every current app interface—has the same shortcut. If Face Groups and labels are in place, the feature may simply not be available to your account.

Google has used recognized people and pets in other Photos features, including Live Albums. In 2018, Google described Live Albums as automatically adding photos of selected people and pets as new pictures are taken. That album feature is separate from the newer Search shortcut.

Google’s 2025 anniversary post said shared album updates may appear on photo frames, but that does not make a frame necessary for face search. Google also reported more than 1.5 billion monthly users, over 9 trillion stored photos and videos, and more than 370 million people searching their photos monthly. These are Google’s platform-wide figures, not adoption numbers for the face shortcut.
