Google says it awarded $10 million through its Vulnerability Reward Program (VRP) in 2023. The company’s annual review describes recipients as “600+ researchers” across 68 countries; a U.S. government hearing document gives the more precise count of 632 paid researchers. Android received the largest named product allocation, with more than $3.4 million in rewards.

How much did Google pay bug hunters in 2023?

Google’s March 2024 review of its 2023 VRP results reports $10 million awarded to security researchers. It is a rounded total: a U.S. government hearing document characterizes the amount as close to $10 million and labels the total awards $10M. The review says the researchers were based in 68 countries. Google’s 2023 year-in-review and the government hearing document both cover the 2023 results.

Google’s review uses the rounded description “600+ researchers”; the hearing document’s table specifies 632 paid researchers. These are two ways of reporting the same program’s reach, rather than conflicting totals.

Which Google programs paid the most?

Google’s published breakdown highlights Android and Chrome as major destinations for 2023 rewards. The figures below are the amounts reported for that year, not a complete accounting of every Google program.

Program or area 2023 result reported
Android More than $3.4 million awarded for vulnerabilities. Google also raised the maximum reward for a critical vulnerability to $15,000.
Chrome $2.1 million paid for 359 unique reports of Chrome security bugs.
ESCAL8 security event $70,000 in rewards for more than 20 critical Wear OS and Android Automotive OS vulnerabilities.
Hardwear.io security event $116,000 in rewards for more than 50 vulnerabilities affecting Nest, Fitbit, and wearables.
Generative-AI bugSWAT event 35 reports totaling more than $87,000.

These program and event figures are reported in Google’s 2023 review; SecurityWeek also covered the Chrome total in its 2024 report on Google’s payouts. Android’s total is explicitly more than $3.4 million, so it should not be treated as an exact amount. The $15,000 figure is the raised maximum for a critical Android vulnerability, not a typical award.

What was Google’s biggest bug bounty in 2023?

The highest single reward exceeded $113,000, according to the government hearing document. SecurityWeek reports the amount as $113,337. The latter is a reported specific figure; Google’s own annual review, as summarized in the available sources, does not give an exact maximum in its headline results. See the hearing document and SecurityWeek’s coverage.

What changed in Google’s bug bounty programs in 2023?

Google added or expanded several routes for researchers to report security issues and earn rewards:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It introduced a time-limited Bonus Awards program.
  • It expanded exploit rewards to Chrome and Cloud through the v8CTF initiative.
  • It launched Mobile VRP for first-party Android applications and added Wear OS to the Android program.
  • It published criteria for security reports affecting generative-AI products.

These changes were described in Google’s review of the 2023 program. Together with the dedicated bugSWAT event, the additions show that the year’s payout included work beyond the established Android and Chrome tracks.

What the $10 million figure does—and does not—show

The total is a measure of rewards paid, not a stated return-on-investment calculation. Google’s review reports payouts and program activity but does not quantify how much money the program saved the company or establish a causal ROI percentage. The result should also be kept tied to 2023: annual totals can differ from one year to the next.
