Google expanded Gemini in Google Classroom to K–12 students of all ages beginning August 10, 2026. Students can use eligible class materials to get guided help and create study resources, but access is controlled by the school or organization—not an individual student signup.
What Google changed
Before the expansion, Gemini in Classroom was available to higher-education students aged 18 and over. Google says that, from August 10, 2026, the feature became available to K–12 students and higher-education students of all ages when their administrator grants access to Gemini in Classroom and the relevant Gemini app and/or Gemini Notebook services. Google Workspace announcement
This is a school-managed feature. A student needs the Student role in Classroom, and the organization must enable the relevant services. Google says administrators can control access by group or organizational unit, including disabling access for users under 18 through a separate organizational unit. The Gemini tab is on by default for teachers and students where the relevant service is enabled; if Gemini itself is off for a student, Gemini features will not appear.

Google says the Classroom Gemini tab is available globally in languages supported by both Classroom and Gemini. Actual availability still depends on the account, administrator settings, and supported language.

What students can do with Classroom materials
Eligible students can select course materials and use them as context for study activities. Gemini can also draw on the selected class and assignment, including its title, instructions, and curriculum materials, when students use Classroom starter prompts or “Learn with Gemini.”
- Get guided help: “Learn with Gemini” can guide a student through material or generate study resources based on the class curriculum.
- Make flashcards and practice quizzes: Students can create these from selected course materials.
- Create study guides: The available tools can generate guides based on curriculum content.
- Use assignment context: Classroom starter prompts can incorporate an assignment’s instructions and related class materials.
These are AI-generated learning aids, not a guarantee that every explanation or answer is correct. Google advises students to review generated content, check it against class materials, and refine it to fit the assignment and local policies.

Can kids use Gemini for school?
They may be able to, but age alone does not grant access. A student using a school account needs the school to enable Gemini in Classroom and the connected Gemini service or services, and the account must have the appropriate Classroom role. Families should ask the school or district whether the feature is enabled for the student’s organizational unit and what rules apply to AI-assisted work.

Google’s broader Gemini for Education information describes school access as administrator-managed and included with Workspace for Education. It distinguishes the standalone Gemini app from AI features integrated into Workspace applications. The page is broader than the August Classroom change: a school-issued account still requires an eligible education environment and administrator enablement.

Google has described stricter content policies for users under 18, youth onboarding, and education data protections in its 2025 education announcement. These are Google’s descriptions of its safeguards, not an independent audit of their effectiveness. Schools and families should consult their own policies and Google’s current terms for the account in use.
Classroom Gemini and Gemini study notebooks are different
Google’s August Classroom announcement concerns a school-managed tool that uses class and assignment context. Gemini study notebooks are a separate feature in the Gemini app, with their own rollout and access conditions.

Google introduced study notebooks on June 25, 2026, as personalized lessons built around a learning goal and materials a user prompts or uploads. Google described a diagnostic quiz to identify focus areas, bite-sized interactive lessons, progress checks, and the ability to update a plan with newly added materials. That announcement also described full-length, no-cost ACT and GRE practice tests in Gemini in partnership with The Princeton Review. Google’s June 25 announcement
A separate Workspace update in September 2026 extended study notebooks to users of all ages signed in with school- or work-issued Google accounts, provided administrators enabled both Gemini and Gemini Notebook. Google said the gradual rollout began September 17 and could take up to 15 days for features to appear. Its announcement listed Workspace customers and Workspace Individual subscribers outside the European Economic Area, plus personal Google accounts globally; it said EEA rollout would follow in the coming weeks. These notebook conditions should not be taken as the access rules for Gemini in Classroom. Google Workspace study-notebook update
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What families and educators should review
- Whether the school has enabled it: Ask which services are active for the student’s account and organizational unit.
- What work may use AI: Confirm classroom, district, and assignment rules before using generated material in submitted work.
- Whether outputs match the lesson: Check facts and explanations against teacher-provided materials; AI can make mistakes.
- How access is supervised: Ask who can enable or disable the feature and how the school handles access for students under 18.
- Which Gemini feature is being discussed: Classroom tools and Gemini study notebooks have different contexts, settings, and rollout conditions.
Google has not established in these announcements that the tools improve learning outcomes. Treat flashcards, quizzes, and generated guides as optional study support that needs review, rather than proof of mastery or a replacement for instruction.
