For a personal Google Account, buying more Google storage means subscribing to Google One. The subscription raises one shared storage limit for Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos; it is not a separate upgrade for each service. Whether it is worth paying for depends on whether cleanup can free enough space, how many people need capacity, and whether you will use any benefits bundled with a paid tier.
Google One and Google Drive do different jobs
Google Drive is a service for storing and organizing files. Google One is the subscription that adds storage to a Google Account. Google describes it as a subscription that gives you more storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. The free Google Account quota is up to 15 GB shared across those services, not 15 GB for each one. Google One overview and Google storage support explain the distinction.
That shared quota matters: large files, email attachments, and photos can all use the same pool. At the account limit, Google says activity can be affected across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. The specific effects depend on the service and account; check Google’s current storage-management guidance for details.

How much does Google One cost?
On Google’s US plan page, accessed October 7, 2026, the listed options included Basic with 100 GB for $1.99 per month, Google AI Plus with 2 TB for $9.99 per month, and Google AI Pro with 5 TB for $19.99 per month. These are a dated US price snapshot, not guaranteed prices for another country or a later date. Google says availability depends on account and location, and local taxes or fees may apply. Check the offer shown for your account on the Google One plans page before subscribing.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Plan names, storage tiers, and included benefits can change, and the available offer may vary by market or account. Google’s broader plan overview shows a changing range of storage and AI plans, but an add-on shown there should not be assumed to be available with every plan or in every country. Google says subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled; review the terms for the plan and billing period you select.
What a paid plan includes beyond storage
Storage sharing
Basic and higher plans can share storage with up to five additional people, for up to six people including the plan manager, according to Google’s plan information. Each member keeps their own private content. Some benefits may be limited to the plan manager, and other bundled benefits may depend on country. If several people need space, compare the cost of one eligible shared plan with separate plans rather than assuming every benefit is shared. Google’s overview lists current plan details.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Other plan benefits
Higher tiers may include AI access and other benefits. Eligibility and features can depend on country, age, account, and plan. Count those extras as value only if you can use them and would otherwise pay for the same service; their advertised presence alone does not make a higher tier a saving.

When paying for more storage makes sense
- You need the services to keep working normally. If you rely on receiving email, uploading Drive files, or backing up photos and cannot stay below the quota, extra cloud capacity can be more practical than repeatedly deleting files.
- Your need is ongoing. Google One adds capacity within the shared Google storage system, which is useful when new mail, files, and photo backups will continue to arrive.
- Several people need space. An eligible shared plan may cover multiple household members while keeping their content private.
- You will use the included benefits. A higher tier may be worthwhile if its available extras matter to you, not merely because they are bundled.
Alternatives to subscribing
Clean up the account first
You can manage storage without being a Google One member. Review large files, email attachments, and photos you no longer need using Google’s storage-management tools. Cleanup is the least expensive route if it frees enough room for your continuing needs; it does not solve an ongoing shortfall if the account quickly fills again.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Export an archive for a separate copy
Google Takeout can create a downloadable archive of supported account data. Google says downloading an archive does not delete the originals from its servers, and recommends keeping the download somewhere safe with enough space. A portable external drive can hold that archive, but it is a separate copy—not additional Google cloud quota. Moving or exporting photos does not make Gmail, Drive, and Photos operate as though the account had more storage.
Check whether your account is managed
If you use a work or school Google Account, you generally cannot buy more storage yourself. Google directs managed-account users to their administrator. Workspace Individual is a separate product route, not the same as purchasing a consumer Google One plan. Check Google’s storage-purchase guidance or ask your administrator before trying to upgrade.

A practical way to choose
- Check the account and quota. Confirm whether you use a personal or managed account and see how much shared storage is in use.
- Try cleanup if it can meet your need. Remove unneeded data if that will keep the account below its limit over time.
- Decide whether you need live Google storage or an archive. Choose Google One for added capacity inside Gmail, Drive, and Photos; use an export when your goal is a separate downloadable copy.
- Compare the plan in your market. Check current local prices, storage, billing period, renewal terms, and eligibility on Google’s plan page.
- Account for other users and benefits. Consider storage sharing if several people need room, and value bundled extras only if they are available to you and useful.
