Google One VPN and Google’s Dark Web Report do different jobs. Google discontinued the VPN benefit in 2024, according to a July 2024 Google Pixel Community answer from a Product Expert Alumni. Separately, Google announced in May 2023 that Gmail account holders in the U.S. could scan for their Gmail address with Dark Web Report without a Google One subscription. That monitoring feature is not a replacement for a VPN.
What happened to Google One VPN?
Google first announced VPN by Google One in October 2020 as a benefit for subscribers on 2 TB and higher plans, initially rolling it out in the U.S. on Android. In March 2023, Google expanded VPN access to all Google One plans. During that rollout, Google described availability across Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac in 22 countries; that was a historical rollout figure, not a current availability list.
On July 14, 2024, a Product Expert Alumni answering a question in the Google Pixel Community said the Google One VPN had been discontinued everywhere and linked to Google’s help material. This was a community answer, not a formal discontinuation announcement from Google. Read the Google Pixel Community answer. Google’s earlier announcements document the feature’s original rollout and expansion: Google’s 2020 VPN announcement and Google’s 2023 Google One security-features announcement.

Is Google’s Dark Web Report a free VPN replacement?
No. A VPN routes network traffic through a VPN server; a dark-web monitoring report checks whether selected personal information appears in data associated with breaches. The report does not route or protect your internet traffic, and a VPN does not perform the same breach-monitoring role.

Google’s December 2022 explanation said VPN traffic was routed through a remote server so destination sites would see the server’s IP address rather than the device’s. Google also described separating account access from traffic routing to help prevent traffic from being linked to a user’s Google account or identity. Those are Google’s descriptions of its design, not a guarantee of anonymity or independent verification. Google’s VPN questions and answers.
Is Google’s Dark Web Report free, and who can use it?
In May 2023, Google announced that anyone with a Gmail account in the U.S. would be able to scan for their Gmail address without a Google One subscription. Google said select international markets were planned. Those statements describe the rollout announced at the time; they do not establish present-day eligibility in every country or for every account type. Google’s May 2023 online-safety announcement.

How do I check whether my Gmail address appears in a dark-web report?
If the feature is available for your account, open the Google app, tap your account menu, and look for Dark Web Report. Google described this account-menu access in its October 2023 announcement. Follow the prompts to start a scan or manage the monitoring profile. The exact options may differ by region, account type, and current app version.
Google’s March 2023 announcement said users could choose which personal information to include, delete information from the profile, or stop monitoring. A scan checks for matches against the data sources covered by the service; it should not be treated as a comprehensive search of everything on the dark web.
What should you do if the report finds your information?
A match means the reported information appeared in data checked by the service. It is a warning to take protective steps, not proof by itself that someone has committed identity theft or accessed one of your accounts. Google said it would notify users of matches and offer guidance, but the report does not remove information from breach collections or guarantee that it cannot be misused.

- Secure the affected account: Change its password, and change that password anywhere else you reused it. Use a unique password for each account.
- Turn on stronger sign-in protection: Enable two-step verification where available, and review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, and signed-in devices.
- Respond to the data type: If a phone number or email address is exposed, watch for targeted phishing and unexpected verification prompts. If financial or government identification details are involved, contact the relevant institution or authority for guidance on protective measures available in your location.
- Be cautious with messages and calls: Do not share passwords, one-time codes, or sensitive information in response to an unsolicited contact claiming to help.
Should you cancel Google One because the VPN ended?
The VPN benefit ending and canceling a Google One membership are separate decisions. Google’s membership help says that after cancellation, paid benefits and additional storage end at the billing-cycle boundary. Members retain up to 15 GB of default storage at no charge; check your storage use before canceling if you rely on the extra space. Google One: Cancel your membership.
What to compare if you need a VPN or breach monitoring
Choose a service based on the job you need done. For a VPN, compare supported devices and operating systems, privacy and logging claims, independent security audits, jurisdiction, connection behavior, and current price. For breach monitoring, compare the information types checked, data-source coverage, alert timing, remediation help, account-security features, geographic and account eligibility, and price. Neither type of service should be assumed to erase exposed data or guarantee that an account is safe.
