Google stopped selling music through the Google Play Music Store in 2020, when it retired Google Play Music and directed users to YouTube Music. That ended one way to buy digital music from Google; it did not end music purchases. Downloadable files and physical releases remain options, though buying a digital copy is not the same as owning the recording’s copyright.
What happened to Google Play Music purchases?
On August 4, 2020, Google’s Team YouTube announced that YouTube Music would replace Google Play Music by December of that year. Google said that purchases and pre-orders through the Play Music store, along with uploads and downloads through Music Manager, would end beginning in late August. Users were told they could move library content to YouTube Music or export and download purchased and uploaded music with Google Takeout. Google’s announcement also said listeners could upload tracks bought elsewhere to YouTube Music after the store closed.

That was a migration route announced at the time, not a promise that the transfer window remains available now. If you still need files from an old purchase, check what is already saved on your devices and in your backups; the 2020 announcement does not establish a current way to recover every past purchase.

Usually, “buying” digital music means paying for access to a copy under the seller’s terms—not acquiring copyright in the recording. Google Play’s Terms of Service describe a non-exclusive right to store, access, view, use, and display content copies for personal, non-commercial purposes, subject to applicable terms and policies. The exact rights and ability to retrieve a file depend on the vendor and the content.

Before paying, check whether the seller provides a downloadable file, what formats are offered, whether restrictions such as DRM apply, and how the seller’s terms describe access. A saved file can make listening less dependent on an active streaming subscription, but it does not by itself transfer copyright or guarantee that every use is permitted.
Where can you still buy music to download?
Bandcamp downloads
Bandcamp provides a current example of buying a release and retrieving a file. Buyers can download after checkout, from the receipt email, or later through the Collection or Purchases pages. The formats available depend on the release; Bandcamp says its downloads are DRM-free, and its help material describes a range of optional formats, including lossless. See Bandcamp’s download instructions and its DRM explanation.

That does not mean every album is available on Bandcamp or that every release comes in every format. Check the specific release page before purchasing. Bandcamp also has streaming limits described in its streaming help; a purchased download is the relevant option when you want a file rather than relying only on listening through the service.
Can you still buy music on CD or vinyl?
Yes. Physical releases remain a separate way to keep music, and Bandcamp’s Terms of Use cover artist sales of physical merchandise as well as digital content. A CD or record gives you a physical item, but whether it also includes a download depends on the artist or retailer.

Amazon’s UK Music Terms of Use refer to AutoRip, under which qualifying CD or vinyl orders can receive a digital version. This is UK-specific and applies only to eligible orders. Check your country, the current product listing, and the order’s eligibility before expecting a digital copy.

Google’s decision shows a change in Google’s product strategy: it replaced a store for individual music purchases with YouTube Music and described uploading music bought elsewhere. It does not prove that listeners as a whole have abandoned ownership. The available evidence here establishes that downloadable music and physical releases are still offered, but it does not establish a current global measure of how many people buy or prefer them.

If you want to avoid a streaming subscription, the practical choice is still between purchasing a downloadable file and buying a physical release. Compare what you can retrieve, the format and restrictions, and the seller’s terms for the particular album—not just whether a service calls the transaction a purchase.
