No single thermostat wins for every home. The right choice depends first on whether your heating and cooling system wiring is compatible, and second on which smart-home ecosystem you already use. In most cases, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) suits homes built around Google Home, while ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium suits households that want a wider range of voice assistants, room sensing in the box, and air-quality features. ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced is the lower-priced ecobee option, with its room sensors sold separately.
Check your wiring before you compare features
Wiring decides whether any of these thermostats will install without extra parts, so start there. Most residential systems use 24-volt low-voltage control wiring, and both brands design their products for that standard. The wire that causes the most trouble is the common wire, usually labeled C, which supplies continuous power to the thermostat.
- Turn off the system at the furnace or air handler switch and the breaker before you remove the old thermostat.
- Photograph the wires attached to the old thermostat before you disconnect anything. Note the terminal letters: R (power), W (heat), Y (cooling), G (fan), and C (common), plus any extra terminals such as O/B for heat pumps or Rc/Rh for split-power systems.
- Check whether a C wire is present. If it is, most installations are straightforward. If it is not, look at the model-specific options described below.
- Run the manufacturer’s compatibility check before buying. Google’s guidance says the Google Home or Nest app walks you through compatibility questions during setup, before you install the thermostat. ecobee’s model pages describe their compatibility scope; confirm your system type against the page for the exact model.
Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)
Google’s technical specifications state that the 4th-generation model “works with most 24V systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump, and radiant.” Google says it is designed to work without a common C wire. In limited cases, a C wire or the Nest Power Connector is needed, so the product’s compatibility guidance should be treated as the final word for your system. Google’s Nest thermostat compatibility page covers the checks in more detail.
ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium and Enhanced
Both ecobee models are designed for most 24 VAC equipment, and both include a Power Extender Kit that ecobee says can enable installation in many homes without a C wire. The Enhanced page describes its power design plainly: “ecobee thermostats are powered by a dedicated 24VAC power supply using a Common wire (or C wire) for consistent performance, even in the coldest weather.” The Power Extender Kit is the workaround for homes that lack that wire, so a C-wire home and a no-C-wire home should both confirm the kit’s applicability for their specific system. Premium lists conventional systems, heat pumps, boilers, PTACs and fan coils, and supported HVAC accessories. Enhanced lists broad 24 VAC compatibility and support for one-wire accessories.

If your home already runs on one assistant, that often settles the question faster than any sensor specification.

Choosing the Nest
The 4th-generation Nest supports Google Home and Matter-enabled apps and assistants. Its setup requires the Google Home app. If you already use Google speakers and displays, the Nest fits naturally into that setup. Matter support also means the thermostat can work with other Matter-compatible ecosystems, though the cited specifications do not list each platform by name.
Choosing ecobee
ecobee names a broader set of platforms in its product materials: Apple Home/HomeKit, Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. Premium has Alexa built in and can enable Siri through a compatible Apple home hub. Do not assume every platform exposes the same controls on every model. Enhanced supports the same named integrations, but ecobee’s Enhanced page does not claim built-in Alexa or Siri.

Room sensors and what comes in the box
Room sensors matter most when one floor, room, or zone is noticeably warmer or cooler than the thermostat’s location. Both brands offer them, but the package differs, which changes the real price.
- Nest 4th gen: A second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor is included in the box, so you do not need to buy one to start.
- ecobee Premium: A SmartSensor is included.
- ecobee Enhanced: Room sensors are sold separately. ecobee’s remote occupancy and temperature sensor page describes the accessory.
Count sensors in the total cost. A basic Enhanced purchase plus extra sensors can exceed the Premium price if you need several rooms covered.

Air quality, occupancy, and security features
Premium adds air-quality monitoring and occupancy sensing. Its home-monitoring features are not all included. ecobee says some require a Smart Security subscription and optional sensors, so budget for those if you want them. Enhanced adds occupancy-based adjustments, which can change settings when the house is empty, without the air-quality or security add-ons described for Premium. The Nest 4th gen’s Soli motion sensing is a different kind of presence detection; the cited specifications do not describe security or air-quality features for it.
What the savings claims do and do not show
Both brands make energy-savings claims, but they are manufacturer statements rather than results from an independent side-by-side test.

Which thermostat fits which household
- Choose the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) if your home already runs on Google Home, you want Matter support, and you prefer the sensor included in the box. Its lower list price than Premium also matters if you do not need air-quality or security features.
- Choose ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium if you use Alexa or Apple Home, want a sensor included, and want air-quality monitoring or occupancy sensing. Budget for a Smart Security subscription if you want those home-monitoring features.
- Choose ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced if you want an ecobee with occupancy-based adjustments at a lower list price, and you are willing to buy room sensors separately.
- Get a professional opinion first if your wiring has unusual terminals, your system uses multiple stages or zones, or the compatibility check flags a problem. Installation details matter more than brand choice in those cases.

It does not include hands-on testing, and it does not establish a universal performance winner or an independent energy-savings result for either brand. Specifications, supported platforms, and prices can change, so verify the model you plan to buy against the manufacturer’s current pages before purchase.
Official language on compatibility and power
Google’s setup guidance says the app will “guide you through steps to tell you if your system is compatible with your Nest thermostat before you install it.” ecobee’s Enhanced page explains its common-wire design quoted above. Both statements are manufacturer language, and the cited pages do not name an individual speaker for them.
